well, I had both. Plextor definetely has better performance, but don't ask me what kind of parts they're using, since after about a month my tray stopped working. I RMAed the drive, used next one for next few month and front plate felt off. It was burning CDs no problem though, fast and quite. Instead of getting 3rd RMA on Plextor, I've decided to give a try to 8x4x24 Yamaha. Works up to day without any problems whatsoever. No parts falling off at all. As far as DAE, trust me, it does't really matter unless you have only one CD-ROM in your computer. I definetely would recommend you to go with Yamaha if you thinking about keeping drive for a while. If you want something what will be fast but will fall apart, go with Plextor.
