i am looking at buying either a yamaha 8/8/24 with value kit or a plextor 8/4/32.
re-write speed doesn't really matter to me.

i know that plextor and yamaha are both good cdr's. which would be better?

I'd say Plextor only because my Yamaha does DAE at only 1x (I use another CD-ROM for ripping, but still). In Yamaha's defense, the drive tray on the Plextor is very slow.

Unanimous Plextor response? Well... this is my vote and its going to Yamaha. First of all the Plextor 8x4x32 does not have burnproof, second its only 4X RW, and third Yamaha is also an excellent CD-RW. Ripping speed? Well, who rips with a burner anyway?

I think I'd have to say Yamaha.... Don't ask me why, but I've always like Yamaha burners... probably 'cause I've never used a Plextor one before...

well, I had both. Plextor definetely has better performance, but don't ask me what kind of parts they're using, since after about a month my tray stopped working. I RMAed the drive, used next one for next few month and front plate felt off. It was burning CDs no problem though, fast and quite. Instead of getting 3rd RMA on Plextor, I've decided to give a try to 8x4x24 Yamaha. Works up to day without any problems whatsoever. No parts falling off at all. As far as DAE, trust me, it does't really matter unless you have only one CD-ROM in your computer. I definetely would recommend you to go with Yamaha if you thinking about keeping drive for a while. If you want something what will be fast but will fall apart, go with Plextor.

Never used a Yamaha but I hear they're good. I have a Plextor 8432a and I would do it again for one simple reason:

CloneCd.

Yamaha doesn't do DAO RAW and that's all you need to know. Plextor does.

No contest.

Because of that i'd rather get a TDK or Sony or even an HP for the DAO RAW. What's the point limiting yourself to just music and unprotected software?

I would go with the plextor. But since my history with burners doesn't go any further than this I can't give you an experienced answer. But I have tried and compared with other burners like HP and they all do burn, but Plextor does it faster. As bill_n_opus saidit has DAO RAW.

Okay, I decided to find out for myself which was better, Yamaha or Plextor, by doin' a track-burnin' comparison. I already ran the Yamaha and had pretty good results, even in the mud. Now it's time for the Plextor. Hey! Where's the handlebars on this thing??? Shoot! I ain't gonna be burnin' up no track with this thing!

Regards,
Jim

Basically, you can't really gowrong with either.

And, you can do DAO RAW on a Yamaha. Done it loads of times with MakeCD on the Amiga.
