Don't you mean $259 or am I seriously missing something? $159 would be the deal of a lifetime.

only problem is that 2 MB is not enough cache to support 1 second of data at 8x.

Never caused me any problems. What's wrong with using your hd for cache?

Whoah! It's nice to see Plextor back in front of the pack. I spent nearly $500 on their 2x CD writer (they were Texel back then) and was disappointed when they fell behind some of the other manufacturers and were late moving from SCSI to IDE and then even later to DVD.

That 2MB buffer size does give me pause, though. And I hope there will be an external USB2 version.

DVD burning technology is moving too fast and is getting too cheap
I liked it when I was the only one who has a DVD burner

Wow, I am surprised its so cheap. You would think it would be more expensive. Buying it right now is pointless considering no one makes media that fast and of course that 2MB is questionable.

Well a lot of people will be buying this in spite of the fact that 8X media isn't readily available and will probably be expensive when it becomes available. Great price for Plextor and 8X. Other DVD burners' prices are going to have to keep dropping and so will media prices. Maybe some of the current 4X discs can be overburned to 6X. Hopefully someone who buys this drive will report back their results.

something like 70x I believe. CD is 150 kbs and DVD is like 1300 kbs (that may be wrong a bit).

So what are the limitations in terms of bus speed and drive access times for DVD burners? At what point do we reach the point where further increases are not feasible with current PCs?

I read that one DVD writer MFG say that 16x would be the limit.

There is no use to get an 8x dvd recorder when a 4x will write an entire dvd in 11 minutes or less. 8 minutes only for DVD+R is not that big of an improvement.

Go for a cheaper dual deal IMO.

Actually I think if you want to fill up a disc fully @ 4X it takes 14 minutes. I haven't myself burned a +R disc @ 4X but in the review of my DVD+R drive(cendyne rebranded NEC 1100A) they said 22 minutes for +RW and 14 minutes for +R and I burned a +RW and it did in fact, take almost exactly 22 minutes when I filled it to the brim with data. So the numbers seem to be accurate(haven't burned a 4X +R yet because media's so frickin expensive that I'm thinking of buying a +- drive)

So going from 14minutes to 8 sounds good to me. What's probably NOT going to be good is the $3 media.
