You can just buy the internal model with a 5.25 enclosure to achieve externalness (I just made that word up).

their price seems some what reasonable as well for a new writing speed that's coming out

Its a good deal, but I'll wait until either DVD burners are FAR or they have picked a freakin standard (shouldn't take more than a year...if it doesnt happen by then, I'll prob get something then)

This is a steal iF this is an original Plextor and not a rebadged NEC like their first DVD+R

LiteOn btw sends their parts out to stay at home moms and such where it is assembled, like how you get paid for stuffing envelopes your spare time.

There's still nobody in the business that can match Plextor's quality and engineering (if its an original plextor)

Uh, got anything to back that up, fly boy? Looked at from just about any angle, that statement is ridiculous.

I wonder how reasonable this price will be compared to the 4x models as they are dropping in price really fast.
2mb buffer sounds small, but does it really matter anymore with all the anti-buffer under run tech in drives now a days?

FlyPenFLy -- Are you serious? Please provide info to back up your statement.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lite-On used OEM manufacturers for part or all of their manufacturing but it is incredibly unlikely that they send components to stay at home moms around the world to assemble their CD and DVD writers

thanks

Adwantage of this drive is that it writes CD-Rs at 40X while others can do only 16X (some 24X).

The new Lite-On writes at 40x.. so will the new 8x DVD writer from NEC when it ships this fall.

I don't think the 2mb buffer would pose a problem @ this point in time, sence the 8x speed dose not write fast enough for there to be consern for underruns,I thought 48x 52x cdr speeds needed larger buffers to sustain the data flow for helping prevent the buffer underruns .When cdrs first came out 4x 6x 8x 16x ect they didn't have large buffers @ that point...........So I'm thinking there is no need yet for anything biger right? I would also think Plextor would know..........

Accesstek Inc., which owns the Optorite brand has said that they will have a Sanyo build 8x DVD writer on the market in September under the Optorite brand name, but they don't say if it will be a single or dual format writer. It could have a 8MB buffer like the current Optorite 4x dual writer and if they price it at the same retail price as the Optorite 4x dual writer ($220), it will be a interesting choose.

I don't think the buffer matters anymore (Well it did back with buffer underruns and before we had all that cool technology) else my 49x liteon wouldn't be burning full cds in two and a half minutes...

You're right, they don't really even need buffers anymore. In my experience, buffers are more for reading than writing anymore. But...if you notice that 1x DVD±R is around 1500k/sec, then a 2MB buffer would be needed (approximately) for ever 1x ofthe burner. Therefore, an 8MB drive needs a 16MB buffer to be fully utilized.

something like 70x I believe. CD is 150 kbs and DVD is like 1300 kbs (that may be wrong a bit).

my 2.4x sony equals to about 20-24x cdr burning speed

I read that one DVD writer MFG say that 16x would be the limit.

Which is 4 minutes for 4.7gb, I'd take that! Also what is the limiting factor there? IDE transfer rates, or PCI bus limitations?

I'm guessing rotational speed.
