Looks like this is the best burner out.
Any ideas where to buy it online? Not listed on pricewatch

Its release has been delayed hence the reason why most suppliers don't have any stock. Hopefully my supplier will get a few in this week.

As far as I'm concerned.....I had thought about the 716A (IDE) until I saw that shockingly it has some problems and people are returning them. So, I'm hoping the 716SA is better. Also, for those of us with our IDE connectors used, SATA is the only option if you don't want to slave a device unless you want to pay for a converter.

. The PATA version had problems with some early batches (I think they recalled them as the first firmware update didn't do much to solve the problem either) and the SATA version isn't out yet (at least in the States). So right now the 716 is made of unobtainium...
. I hope you are aware that the SATA optical drives only work with a few chipsets. Mostly Intel or SiliconImage. There is a list on the Plextor web site.

I just don't like slaving......"leeching" one drive off another since that can hurt performance. I've always run each HD and each optical as a stand alone master since I've always used mobo's that had the connectors.

Yes, I definitely plan on waiting on reviews. I wanted to know who was selling them to check the $.

Not sure what you mean by: By ide controller you mean PCI one? My mobo now is a P4C800-E Deluxe and I have two SATA HD's on the SATA Promise controllers, and an ATA133 HD on the Promise IDE controller (which cannot support optical drives). I have a CDROM and CDRW drive on the PRI and SEC IDE ports, which leaves me two Intel Native ICH5(R) SATA connectors which can support SATA optical drives, at least this one according to Plextor.

Ah yes, "unobtainium". Plextor said this drive is supported on my mobo, but they didn't have an "X" next to SP2, only SP1, so that concerns me. I don't know if it just plain won't work on SP2, or they just didn't test it on SP2.

(Hee hee. My spell checker just prompted to change "unobtainium" to "Einsteinium"! LOL. )

Difference in price should be somewhere around 30-40 according to difference between previous models.

Yeah, BestBuy was the only one to get those bad batches thru some inside deal with Plextor (which should be illegal, IMO) - they don't work at all well at 16x. You'll discover that soon enough...

Man, it gets dark early now...

Maybe someone can tell me which is correct:
Plextor now has the 716SA at their site now for $159 pre-order. Still not listed at Pricewatch. That thing is only a 4x CDRW write!?? Geeeze, what's the deal with only a 4x CDRW speed!?? Well this once again comes as no surprise, looks like their site is screwed up for this drive. This is an SATA drive, yet in the spec table they say "66mb/sec transfer UDMA 4". So the rest of the spec table may be in error as well.
http://www.plextor.com/english/products/716SA.htm

This is senseless. They have a 712SA which is SATA, and it has 24x CDRW speeds but it's not dual layer! So why would they come out with a dual layer 716SA that's only a 4x CDRW??? On this page they say it's a 24x CDRW, http://www.plextor.com/english..._708Advdrw_drives.html but on the spec table at the bottom of this page, http://www.plextor.com/english/products/716SA.htm they say it's only 4x CDRW. So does anyone know which is correct?

I wonder why it's listed at Froogle and not at Google? At least I couldn't find anyone selling it at Google.

Good question. I sort of asked this of Plextor a few minutes ago. I made this statement to their TS in regards to the problems with the 716 IDE version: "If the 716SA is basically the same drive only with an SATA bridge adapter, then it probably be logical to assume it too would have the same issues as the 716 in IDE"
The reply I got was: "The issues have all been resolved for some time now." Which leads me to believe it's not a true SATA drive since he didn't say anything to the contrary.

I bought a PX-712 that's serial ata, and I've come across some issues that I just don't how how to resolve. Whenever I try burning a DVD, or CD for that matter, my computer lags like NO OTHER.. I'm not sure why, I've updated the firmware and drivers, and it's on my Asus A8V Deluxe's regular SATA link. Anybody have any information on what could be going on here?

Also, I'm new to SATA, and this is probably a motherboard issue, but, I can't seem to get bootable-CDs to boot with this SATA optical. The BIOS doesn't give me an option to set SATA or SCSI devices in the boot order, so I really don't know what to do, any ideas on this perhaps?

Try installing the updated ASPI drivers - DL from adaptec.com. Yeah, I know it says for SCSI but it seems to help with some strange DVD problems too.

adeathangel,

Were you able to resolve this issue? The reason I ask is because I plan to buy the 712SA (got an Intel D915GAV motherboard with 4 SATA ports). Should I?
