Is it worth the extra 20 to 30 bucks for the 40x/16x/10x Plextor CDRW instead of the 32x/12x/10x Plextor?

i just picked up the 16x today from mwave only because the retail version was out at newegg.com.

There isn't a significant difference.... so you have to wait 1 to 2 minutes longer... if the bragging rights are worth that much to you the by all means go ahead.


Features are what I look for. You can multitask fine while burning, so 1-2 mintues is not worth it for most people. If there was some cool new feature or capability then it would be worth it.

Hey, easy on the old school there. I still use a Teac 6x SCSI burner.

It gets the job done for the most part. I might upgrade to a new Plextor burner to compliment my UltraPlex 40, but not for speed reasons (I can live with 12 minute CDs). I need something that supports DAO-RAW packet writing (the Teac I have is only supported in SAO).

The AOpen 12x/10x is listed at $129 on PriceWatch. It's a Richo OEM design that beats Plextor and Yamaha 12x units by a margin of at least 10 seconds per disc. It also features BurnGood, or whatever AOpen calls their BurnProof clone, which is supposed to be better than the Plextor technology.

Plextor didn't make BurnProof technology, Sanyo did. Plextor just licenses it for use in their burners, like other ppl.

well.. IMHO, why not? you get to burn 16x instead of 12x, but of course, media is always a consideration, if you have tons of media that won't work at 16x (it really depends, I have some 4x Taiyo Yuden that'll work with my 12x no prob), and force you to burn at 12x, then it's probably not worth the money. How much burning do you plan to do? if you plan to do mass distro, a minute faster is a minute saved.

If my memory serves me correctly, anything beyond the 12x write speeds uses the variable speed writing scheme. Forgot the technical description either CAV or CLV. But the 16x writers are 16x maximum not 16x throughout the whole burn process. The 12x writers are 12x across the entire CD. Usually, the 12x writers are just as fast if not faster than the 16x writers. If you look on box of a 16x writer, they hide this by saying 16x Max. MAX being the key word.

For those that say that the extra 4x may not be worth it, that is one way to look at it. But you are also getting an extra 8x on the read side. For those that do a lot of &quot;backups&quot; of data and especially audio, this is a real bargain for $20.

jcastle - I know that the Yamaha does this and that's why it's had a mixed rating ... however, I think that the new versions of the Plex among others are full speed from start to finish ... although I may be wrong on that.
