Hi,

I want to network my desktop and laptop. My desktop installed Win2K and my laptop has Win98 SE. I am using switch and cables. I setuped a user for my laptop on my desktop. And I also followed the acticle on Anantech to configure my networking. But two computers can't see each other besides there was only once on which the laptop can see the desktop.
Thanks.

Switch and cables? Is that to reverse the wires on the CAT5? If you don't have something that reverses the connection (HUB, reversing cable or adapter to reverse one) then it won't connect. In other words a normal straight passthrough LAN cable will not work.

Assuming you have this correct, does your lan adapter on your box have lights? If it does are they on? If not there is something wrong.

What protocols do you have enabled? Are you using firewall software? What logon are you using?

These are things to think about. I personally have had some issues networking 98 and ME (98 sees ME just fine, but it is sporatic the other way). I am not sure about win2k, but I always assumed it was more network enabled so it should be easy to connect with.

Good Luck getting it solved.

Some more inf.
I used switch and CAT5 cables. Two computers do have network cards. I also saw the light on the network cards.
The problem is my laptop installed many other protocols after I installed cardbus network card for my laptop. Do I have to remove some of them?
There are dialup adapter and Lan adapter.
Thanks.

Your hardware setup looks good.

You don't have to remove any of the protocols for the laptop. You just have to make sure TCP/IP is there, which I'm sure you have.

What I would do is check on both computers to see that each computer can see itself, which will verify that the netword card is installed properly (still wouldn't hurt to reinstall the drivers). And make sure that they are both set to obtain IP address automatically, which I'm sure you have done both.

An alternative is to try setting the 2000 network card to some dummy IP address and leave the 98 on automatic. I have used 2000 and every other OS and networked together, but I've only used it when my 2000 had an IP address 192.168.0.1 for example--so that I could share my connection.

It's definitely possible, and pretty easy from my experience. Hopefully you can get it straightened out.

Edit: Oh yah, check to make sure your cables are in the right ports. Usually 1/uplink are shared.

They can see themselves in network neighbor but can't see each other. Any suggestion?
How to ping?
Thanks.

NETBeui must be installed for computers to see data....TCP/IP is enough to see computers, but NetBeui is required for data transfers.

Also, the computers must have file and printer sharing enabled and the drives that you want to use on both computers must be shared. This allows you to actually see the drives in network neighborhood from the other computers. If you have any problems tell me.

If he's running TCP/IP, NETBeui does not need to be installed or running. You run NETBeui on an unrouted network because it is simple and fast to set up.
