<< I use my PC to bank, invest, surf and primarily play games. I have Windows 98SE running fine and only have stability problems when I screw with my CPU settings (FSB & clock speed). Apart from the fun of learning a new system, is there ANY reason for me to start messing with LINUX? >>

Trust me, you will regret even trying to install Linux. Not even counting the fact that Linux is not a game friendly operating system.

I had more problems with Linux that I EVER had with Windows. And I'm talking major headaches. It truely messed up my drives like nothing ever has before. When I did have it running, the apps were extremely lame for it. It even booted slower than Windows does. I even had a bigger problem trying to uninstall the dang thing.

You will also lose pretty much all Window apps that you use now, as there aren't many quality programs written for Linux.

You can try it if you want, but don't say someone didn't warn you.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this comment, but I don't care cause I know I'm telling the truth. I'd would rather run a MAC than I would Linux.

And OMG if you're into tweaking your computer at least a tiny bit, you will love Linux! So many things to play with! I recommend you go for it and play with it. Knowledge is priceless

Well that?s your opinion and nothing near to the truth.

I was a Windows only person myself for years, I decided to try Linux just for the hell of it. I couldn?t have been more satisfied with Linux. It?s not as user friendly as Windows (for me anyway since I?ve been using Linux for only a few months now), but it?ll give you a new perspective on computers (mainly operating systems).

If you?re not a computer savvy person, and just looking for a new taste of Windows, then maybe people are correct by saying you shouldn?t try Linux. If you?re thinking of doing a dual boot then I don?t see why you couldn't at the least try it out (for sake of expanding your knowledge). But if you are someone looking for an operating system just to get out of the Win9x era, I suggest you take a close look at Win2k.

Windows XP is another issue, it?ll definitely be a pain for end-users who own more then one system and would like to run XP on all of them (like me), and for someone who upgrades a lot (like me). But for a single system user I don?t see why you couldn?t consider it.

I also understand that the OEM version of XP won't have WPA.

I was actually asking that same question year ago. I decided to give it a shot then, but sadly it turned out to be a major catastrophy, due my lack of knowledge and interest at the time. But when I heard about this new micro$oft XP "activation code" crap something popped in my head. The reason I'm going to give Linux another shot, and to force myself to learn it, is Win XP. That should be enough reason for everyone to stop supporting MS.

As it will surely come to the point, when MS owns you and your computer with their OS. You call them on daily basis for a new code and beg 'em to let you use their OS and then you donate them some extra $$$$$$.. uh, got a bit too excited

Linux is powerfull, stable, free and secure. Everything MS OS' arent. Enough reason?

Linux really isn't that bad. In fact, if you give yourself a project (install apache, ftp, etc.) with Linux. You'll automatically learn a LOT about Linux. I think a lot of people are too proud to be in the learner's seat again and find out how to do simple things like extract files and install programs.

But, at the same time once you know how to do these things in Linux, it becomes a LOT harder to find reasons not to use Linux other than those like "the game I play 50 hours a week isn't supported".

LOL - I pretty much play games 50 hours per week...

Still I will probably give it a go.

Has anyone tried Linux for Windows? It comes with Mandrake and installs in a Windows virtual drive so you can avoid partioning. Install is theoretically easy.

Good, Bad, Excellent, Impressive, Crapola? Any thoughts?

Uh oh!!! I was already having a hard enough time keeping the ladies at bay.. I installed Mandrake 7.2 last night, I now have a triple boot system up and running.. So far I like linux and I really really want to learn it well, I also have a old p75 w/ 20 megs of ram running mandrake 6.0, no gui, it's a server, router, firewall, ftp server.. love the thing.. only I didn't set it up, my friend did, and it hasn't crashed ONCE!!! Except when my old man blows fuses..
