Pneumonia + fractured rib

What A crappy weekend, found out I have pneumonia in left lung and cracked ribs from coughing. They sent me home with a bunch of meds and told me ther is nothing one can do about cracked ribs, just take lortab and deal with it for 2 frigging months...

I know a coworker who did the same thing. Worst possible thing to happen when having the flu, since there's no way to hold a rib in place and just have to deal with the excruciating pain until healed and feeling better.

I've heard of cracking ribs by coughing. I haven't known anyone myself, but I bet it sucks. I've coughed till my ribs were sore, and that was bad enough. I couldn't imagine it with cracked ribs :^(

unfortunately this can happen.

its not like they can put your ribs in a sling. They usually do a taping around your ribs to keep them as immobile as possible.

I once had pneumonia in my left lung and had bruised the ribs badly from coughing. Doctor x-rayed them because he thought for sure I had cracked them. I was lucky I hadn't. Loads of meds, pain killers, and wore a rib brace for weeks. It was incredibly painful with them bruised, I cant imagine the pain if had they been cracked.

Edit - blowing your nose was bad but sneezing was the worst!

My Uncle was a heavy smoker and his coughing got so bad that one of his ribs cracked.

Thanks, Dr,@ the E-room says this is now considered a bad idea as they want me to cough when necessary to expel as the antibiotics and steroids do their job. Problem is coughing is like having a box cutter stabbed into my back, it sucks. Lortab 7.5 only does so much, kinda weak IMO for this type of deal..
