Whoo! Those are some bad stories.

I hate to think what I'd do if I got a retail box filled with something other than what I expected - I bet it would be a nightmare trying to prove it was me who was not trying to pull a fast one.

<< P.S. Its not that we are all incompetent at Best Buy, its that its invariably the 16 year old girl who knows nothing about computers who ends up taking the return. >>

I'm not directing this solely towards BB, but it takes only a few seconds to match the S/N on the product with the one on the box and receipt. You don't even have to know anything about the product to know if the numbers match or not!!!

I don't know if anything like that has happened to someone buying at Fry's but at least they put those stickers on returned items. That way you know which ones to avoid unless it's the last one I went to the Oregon Fry's with my Dad when he returned a set-top DVD player and even though the box was obviously still factory sealed, they still opened it and looked at all the contents. Maybe they were burned too much in the past?

Hmmm.... in case you didn't know, FutureShop was bought by Best Buy, and Best Buy also intends to open 60 more stores under its own name across Canada, by the end of 2003.

Not a bad idea to OPEN THE BOX while you're still in the store - right in front of a CSR! There's no way of getting screwed then!

I do that with every thing I buy from those types of stores, like someone said earlier, they don't like it, but it's probably the best way from getting shafted.

Hey, hey, hey, wait a moment. First of all, the original poster is not sure how the original PNY GF4 Ti4400 should even look like. Second of all, he has only 3 posts and might be not that familiar with GF4 series of cards. Let's not just to conclusions just yet....

Really! feeling the need to open everything you buy at best buy just to avoid a VERY SLIGHT chance that what you wanted to buy isn't actually inside the box is more a case of paranoia than actual necessity. I mean out of the thousands of transactions that happen everyday at BB, how many do think result in a case of somebody elses dishonesty. Unfortunately this poor guy has no concrete grounds to go back to best buy and plead his case. Put yourself in the MGRs shoes and with an equal amount of pessimism that you guys are displaying, would you guys believe this is what actually happened...I wouldn't.

If this was an open box sale then shame on the guy that got away with it. In defense of BB and just like Bearcave, the CSR wouldn't know what a GF4 looks llike either. If this was a sealed box then I would have a hard time believing that BB had anything to do with it...The previous buyer might have convincingly resealed the box themselves. The best buys around here slap a yellow sticker on returns and mark a few dollars off but DON'T reseal the packages to look like new...

Okay part of the problem is the cards ...you yourself couldn't even figure out what card it is. Do you expect some busy employee to be able to take 15 minutes to track down if its the correct card?

Also AFIK most Best buys dont have shrink wrappers. If you look at open box items they are all taped up not shrink rapped.

When I used to work at Circuit city we had one person that got a chunk of concrete in his subwoofer box.

Good point but I'd hope that even a new member of the forums would know what a gf4 is supposed to look like. Also I'd hope that they'd read some of the reviews before considering buying the card.

PNY has made the mistake of shipping the wrong card in boxes more than once in the past. I don't know if that is the case here, but don't just assume this is BB's fault, because it might not be.

"First of all, the original poster is not sure how the original PNY GF4 Ti4400 should even look like."

If he had gotten the right card he would know it. The card has a distinctive heatsink on it that says Geforce4 with a fan that says PNY on it.

Ohhhh...so THAT's how long it takes too look at the S/N on the card and compare it to the S/N on the box??? Or maybe PNY doesn't use S/Ns??? Even my OEM Visiontek GTS-V had one!

When I go to the DMV, it certainly doesn't take them 15 minutes to make sure my VIN numbers match my registration? It's not brain surgery. Sheesh!

We do use shrink wrap at Best Buy for open items, although we don't always open item returned stuff (We are required to take off some $$ if we sell it as open box, typically if it is an item that has few pieces to it, like maybe a battery charger, that seems to work fine and isn't missing anything, we will just put the box back out,). If it is a sealed item, especially if it is one that we would charge a restocking fee on, we will almost always open item it. As far as the serial number thing goes, we are supposed to check that, but once again, the average CS2 at BB is just a kid and probably doesn't think to do that. We do now own future-shop in Canada, and will probably expand BB into their soon (I swear that I work for the evil empire of consumer electronics sometimes, they keep taking sh!t over)

<< Why is anti-trust going against microsoft instead of best buy is beyond my belief... >>

Bestbuy just has bad customer service. It's not like they're trying to take over the world (or something like that).

I also work at Best Buy. I had some lady buy a digital camera, only to get home and discover there was no camera in the box. Never found out if it was returned w/out a camera, or if an employee stole it or what. She ended up getting a new camera though. I also got a 1 hour camcorder battery returned in a $100 camcorder battery package, and they got away with it.

As for people mentioning Best Buy doesn't have stores in Canada, if you're in Mississauga, they're opening one on Dundas West, just past Winston Churchill Blvd.

Brand new building, looks like it'll be opening up in the next little while.
