Does anyone know if this one is backwards compatible with PC100. I got in on the Best Buy deal for Kingston PC133 ram, but apparantly it isnt backward compatible with PC100 for 440BX motherboards.

It's not really a PC100/133 backward compatible situation, it's because the BX chipset doesn't take dimms that have high density chips.

I think these days a lot of dimms don't work with the BX board. When I got my 3 PC133 256 mb sticks back in the day, I specifically had to look for BX compatibility.

Just in case people don't realize that Staples doesn'tactually hand you the ram and $12, and sends you on your way.

I picked up 2 sticks and made $22.
I was in a different Staples later in the day at St Augustine, Fl and they had another 5 or 6 sticks.
I PMed to a receipt that was posted over at f@twally in a similar thread and I had a backup printout
of the BUY.com price.

SCORE!!!
Got one in Indy....
Manager was real nice, said wow, my cost for this is $131...I told him he should get a new supplier
like maybe buying them from COMPUSA...he laughed and told the clerk to price match it for me...
He left and as the clerk was ringing it up, I said to him.."So if a rebate kicks out, can I have that also?"
He said sure.....and then sure enough, here comes the $50 rebate. He cracks up..I asked him if he
needed any RAM, now might be a good time to stock up...

Price Matched their obviously overpriced PNY to Buy.Com.

149.98
-113.27 110% Price Guarantee
$38.55 including Tax
-$50.00 Mail in rebate
=$11.45 that staples PAID ME to take this RAM...

Thanks for the hot deal

The compatability has little to do with it being pc100 or pc133. both these memories are made in high density fashions now. I am almost certain the PNY is the high density junk that MANY old MB can not take. This is likely why you see this junk being dumped.

I would be very careful with this. My Asus TX97X could not handle high density memory. It was about 3 months ago that I bought so I dont remember the numbers, but make sure you check up on it. I dont think PNYs website offers any assistance either.

your TX97 ...well Asus says..
Is equipped with three DIMM slots to (8,16,32,64, or 128MB) 168-pin SDRAM memory modules up to 256MB
so I'd say its not the rams' fault that it (TX97X) cannot handle a single stick of 512MB pc133 SDRAM ..and btw Samsung (chips clearly denote 7.5 rate) is suck by your reasoning that PNY is junk as that is what is pkged in the PNY clamshell I have in front of me...

here's my experience so far on this one, went in, manager was a crafty youngin and examined the buy.com printouts thoroughly, then he saw my printout of Staples website of the ram, DOH! it had the damn rebate thingy at the bottom in very small print and so he would only offer it to me pricematched after rebate for like $97, F That! DO NOT TAKE ANY PRINTOUT IN FROM ONLINE AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PREY THE MANAGER DOESN"T KNOW BOUT THE REBATE. Well, another day another store I will have it yet!

I can't believe I fell for this one....good one guys...I forgot there was a rebate on this and I let the pricematch go for 47.01 at 110%......shoulda added 50 to the PM price. Well, my store only has 1, so it doesn't really doesn't matter. I'll be on the lookout for this next time....these deals are totally killing my margin.

I tried online first - BIG mistake. Was on hold for like 15 minutes while Secret Squirrel managed to find every way to screw me out of pricematch. First was the "we have to take rebate into account so it is only $99." Then it was "their next day shipping is $16, so have to add that on." Then guy says I have to call you back. Fine. Get call back and he says its going to be delayed cause he has to clear with head office. I say forget it I'll just get at Buy.com. He doesnt even try to salvage sale - "Ok, good bye."

Head over to B&M Staples. Tech mgr there does it with no muss or fuss. But only pricematched to $47 - says 110% is for other retail stores not online stores. Whatever - I get my rebate so I'm not arguing.

BTW, check with customer service. There is no limit on the rebates per household so I picked up 3 (building 2 machines). Cust service rep said that PNY rebates are usually good for 3 per household and to keep my receipts in case of problem.

Thanks again for the awesome deal!!!!

These chips will work, even if the bx board doesn't support high densitity it should still work but it will detect it as the highest density it can detect and probably detect it as a 256 mb module

also, staples price has changed to 129.98. so slightly less from the 110% pm guarantee. I just got mine, didnt get the pm guarantee with it though, but I did get it for 47.01 still. So I got mine for $47.01 + 8% sales tax = $50.77 - 50 rebate = .77 cents
