These are not on sale because chips broke off and are floating around the box. I'd send it back without even putting it in my PC where it might short and cause problems.

Assume you can unlock the 16 Pipes, 6 shaders, how much better is the 6800GT compare to this card unlocked, please give percent wise?
Thanks.

Mine actually did have one component that fell off into the box. I resoldered it back on and i'm going strong right now I didn't want to send it back and have to pay more for a new card, it was worth the risk. Card didn't unlock, but i'm happy with it.

got mine, built my new system and it unlocked quite happily. I haven't benchmarked the differences, but i'm happily playing the battlefield 2 demo and WoW.

i saw some comparisons between the stock, unlocked and 6800gt at http://firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_6800_unlocking/ . it seemed to depend on what game/test you were running, but a fully unlocked card appeared to come in right in between the GT and the vanilla 6800.

Something I recently noticed is that the card does occasionally give me artifacts in the 3DMark05 "Fill rate - Single-Texturing" test:
http://img103.echo.cx/my.php?image=artifacts2qc.jpg

This happens regardless of whether the card is unlocked. Every other test, all of 3DMark03, Aquamark, rthdribl, and a couple games all run fine (both locked and unlocked). Can some of you guys that got this card and have 3DMark05 run this test a few times and see if you notice anything like that?

Unlocking pipes and vertex shader doesn't give you huge boost. It's combination of unlocking the pipes, vertex shader, and overclocking that will give you great performance/price. My Leadtek 6800nu 16/6 at 375/800 scores around 10500 in 3dmark03 which is similar to what my stock BFG 6800GT scored.

well i just retried my card with 3DMark05 and apparently my unlock was no good-- I was getting weird textures over the game, like mesh overlay from things not getting rendered quite right. oh well. what's weird is, it looked fine in BF2 and WoW. I wonder if i should leave it unlocked anyway until i actually notice a problem in a game.

Well, mine unlocked fine I think, but I can't get very high scores on mark05 cause my slot is only AGP 4x .

Might have to build another comp, haha. Another weird thing I'm noticing is greenish text and flickering, but I think that's because the VAIO PSU is a POS.

I ordered last monday evening and got it last wednesday morning and didnt pay for any special shipping. But unfortunately after installing the card I found that it was not working correctly so had to RMA it.

Strangest thing, everything displayed fine but whenever I scrolled my mouse up and down rapidly I would hear an Arcing sound coming from the card itself and my pc would reboot. Same thing would happen a few moments after firing up Battlefield 2.

Never had anything happen like that with a video card. So i put back in my old 5700se and my system was back to normal.

And posting the serial # came to mind too late (I actually just registered today) so I hope no one ends up with that particular card.

These cards might be rejects of some sort and just being dump here and you get good cards by luck. I guess it might be PNY last attempt to savage their defective losses. With things now days, quality is impossible to find.

wow, there does seem to be a high rate of problems here. I ordered one myself, will arrive Friday. this high failure rate with white box make me suspicious that these are returned or "refurbished" cards...

I had bought one of the "XFX 6600GT for $117" at buy.com, arrives today.

but i figured this PNY 6800 was the same price (not counting rebates), was planning on returning the 6600GT unopened.

I want to run 1280x960, 1280x1024 with FSAA so it seems that the PNY 6800 is a better card for me.

now i think i better hold on to that XFX 6600GT (they are also sold out) until I get a chance to see if my PNY 6800 works.

you guys who got a bad one, I think that newegg will allow refund with no restocking since there are no replacement cards available. please keep us informed how your RMAs work out.

unrelated question: i am hoping i will not be CPU-bound running 1280 x 960/1024 res with 4xAA, 8xAF. i have northwood P4 , 3.0 Ghz, 400/800 FSB with 1.0 GB dual channel 3200 SDRAM. am i mistaken on this?

Sorry to hear about so many problems My PNY is great, but, like I said, I bought it off the forums instead...

Anyway, I would say that you are going to pushing, Goaty, in games like HL2 and D3 with those graphics levels. Maybe 2xaa & 4xAF, but you will just have to wait and see...

yeah i know, 4xAA, 8xAF is the goal, i don't expect to get that in newest games.

but in trying to make that goal, assuming that my 6800nu won't unlock (or even if it does), for most games i am still GPU bound, not CPU bound, right?

i guess what i am trying to say is will I be wasting the 6800nu's GPU power with my CPU? is the 6600gt better suited for my P4 3.0 Northwood? I don't plan on upgrading my whole PC anytime soon. it is mainly for work and it does fine for that.

sorry if these questions have been asked a million times. i am an old fart who is a little out of touch with current hardware. WoW, Guild Wars, & BF2 have sucked me back in

Well, to be honest, a 3.0C will be CPU bound to some degree with those cards, but probably not at the resolutions + goodies you are talking about. I would that it would be very adequate for the games you described Actually, either card with your CPU is a pretty good balance IMHO. If you had an A64, you could expect maybe 5-10 more baseline FPS.

so is it even worth upgrading to this card if I have a mobo that only supports 4xAGP? I'm planning on upgrading my system sometime this year as well, and don't know yet if I'll be going the AGP or PCI-E route either, depends on what board I upgrade to.

current card is a GF4 Ti4600

thanks for your input Nat. I found this review at firing squad where they test with a P4 at 3.0 ghz :

firingsquad 6600GT review

they compared a stock 6600GT AGP with OC'd 6600GT with 6800nu (128 mb Leadtek)

the 6800 really kicks butt at 1024x768 and up when you start using any AA

Bastion,

I noticed quite a bit of difference once I upgraded to a MB that supported 8x AGP and had a card that took advantage of it.

But If you are thinking of upgrading your system why not go with a Mother Board that supports SLI and get a PCIE card then add a second card at your leisure? Unless SLI is not in your future.

Ive been thinking of doing just that once prices start to come down to an acceptable level.

On a side note my RMA was recieved by newegg on tuesday but I gather they are inspecting the order as there has been no update for the last day. Ill update when/if i get my replacement card.
