My PNY 6800 isn't bad, but it's not as quiet as my X800 pro. This card uses the nVidia stock cooler which is reasonably quiet when it drops down to low speed after the driver loads, but there is still some of that high frequency fan noise. Try it out and, as yoiu say, you can get the better cooler if you don't like the noise. Those coolers perform better too, of course.

Is there anything wrong with getting an oem video card? I'm not sure how important the cables would be that come in retail boxes.
