PNY 6800 soft mod Question

I picked up the PNY 6800 at CompUSA's sale today and just installed RivaTuner to see if I could get the softmod to work. I did everything I thought I was supposed to do--installing the NVStrap driver, checking the "Allow enabling hardware masked units" box and, finally, putting check marks beside the relevant bits (bit 01 and bit 11), then rebooting. When I fire up RivaTuner to check it out, the bits are still checked, but they're still listed as disabled and the main tab still describes the adapter as 12x1, 5vp. Are there additional settings I need to configure, or does this just mean that the soft mod is not going to work on my card? Thanks for any help you guys can provide...

I'm having the same exact issue. I was able to softmod a BFG 6800 last night, but the PNY wont take the changes. after reboot it just lists 12x1,5vp instead of 16x1,6vp


tried re-installing the drivers, and rivatuner, but no change.


Here's the kicker, I had the old bfg set to 15x1,6vp, and when i first booted up the PNY it had those settings, but after trying to unlock/set the 16x1 pipes, it wont take the change., and now i cant even get the 6vp back either..


bios update to combat the issues/softmodding...???

When I enable the extra pipes and reboot, Windows won't boot up anymore

yes...

soft modded a BFG 6800OC the night before., and it initially used the setting for the 6th vp..

hopefully there is a fix... might try a driver cleaner and see if that helps.... maybe clean out anything rivatuner, or nvdia related in the regestry after uninstalling them again..

ho hum... not really a big deal since the BFG6800OC was defective/artifacting at stock anyway..
at least this way i saved bunch.

alright i can't find the other thread that i replied in but i had problems OCing after i had enabled the 4 pipelines and vertex shader... so anyway.. reverted back to 12 pipelines and 5 shaders... and then nvidia's program did the OCing for me... 380/800 from 325/700 ... not too shabby... ill probably be modifying the cooler and ram sinks + AS5 to get nicer temps and a higher OC later.. but yeah.. told those values to be set at next windows boot.. then put riva tuner back in 16 pipeline mode resetted..bam settings saved. and im in the money
go evga 6800nu for 200$ out the door!

Yay I got the nvstrap driver to work after I reinstalled drivers to 68.11 then reinstalled rivatuner!

any of you tried unlocking the 4 pipes yet?

i tried unlocking them thru riva turner on 6742 nvidia drivers provided by guru, but sadly there were artifacts visible throughout the screen.

any work around method for this?

No if you get artifacts, it means the pipelines are broken.
You lose.

no work around for artifacts, it just means the pipelines were disabled because of hadware failure, and not just disabled to put the core on a 6800NU


The problem we are having is the softmod not taking at all.

And in my case I had half of the softmod still enabled from a 6800OC. And the PNY kept the 6vp setting. I wasnt until i started 3dmark01 and notice a performance drop AFTER overclocking a litle bit, that i realized not only had adding the 4 extra piplines not stuck, but the 6vp was even revertedback to 5vp.

and after trying to enable the remaining piplines on the PNY 6800 it reverted back to 12x1,5vp


I've reinstalled the drivers and riva tuner, but haven't tried any older driver verions or a driver cleaner as of yet

Im going to get the BFG 6800OC from outpost.

I am seriously thinking about softmodding it to a GT. If i get artifacts when i try it does that mean my card is gone. Like is there any chance that i could permanently screw up my card and not be able to go back to the original settings?

Welcome to the problem that everyone who got the newest batch of 6800GTO from dell has. Unwinder (maker of RT) said for some odd reason it can't be done because they are locked another way.

not really , if you get artifacts after the softmod, you can just revert back to the orignal specs and just live with traditional overclocking methods (core/mem).

Your just taking chance on whether or not the disabled pipelines and vp were disabled on purpose, and not because they were faulty.

What sort of speed differences can we see with the 16 vs 12 pipes? At what mhz point does an overclock roughly equal the pipe trick?

I don't think that's enough, when you click customize, if some of the units still say "disabled", it's locked.
