May I suggest editing the title before a few people get too excited... As I just did lol

To answer your question, the only reason that I would think the $100 extra are worth it is if you had a dual-DVI monitor setup. Other then that I would say no.

does anyone know if you overclock the gt to ultra speed you get ultra performance (such as the one shown in review benchmarks) or is there still something to hold the gt below ultra performance ?

I O/C a GT to Ultra Speeds and it did much better in testing, but I did not compare it to on line reviews.

I think the Ultra is a waste of the extra $100. The GT has all the same features as the Ultra just clocked lower. Not like the ATI where they intentionally left pipelines cut out.

Plus with the GT you do not need the extra buffed power supply and the twin connectors nor do you need two slots for it to fit.

with some 6800u's you get better 1.6ms ram .. but on most its 2.0ms just like the 6800GT. The 6800 Ultra does have a better cooler, and is going to get you a little better overclock. Nothing is ever guaranteed though. This goes for the 6800GT as well. Don't assume that buying a 6800GT will get you a card that clocks at Ultra speeds (it's very common but not guaranteed).

With an ultra you are guaranteed ultra speeds, with higher OCing potential, a better cooler, and of course, the dual DVI slots vs. VGA/DVI on the GT's.

Is it worth the $100? Not in my opinion, but if you have $500 lying around and want a great card this thing would rock.

Also worth mentioning, many online retailers are charging $500 for the damn 6800GT because of price gouging, so this is somewhat of a good deal if you want a card fast.

so I understand that assuming I manage to overclock the gt to ultra speeds, then I can count on the fact theat my performance should be the same as the one shown for ultra in various reviews. I ask that because the actual benchmark results are improtant to me to get a picture of the performance I will get from the card.

I agree with woodscomp. The ultra is a waste of a $100. I got my GT running at ultra speed right now and it runs great! And according to coolbits, I'm able to go even further than the ultra speed. I'm just breaking it in for now before I set it to a higher speed (for doom3 of course =) ).
I'm sure though that an ultra can OC well beyound what a GT can achieve.

Does the ultra support Flat panels at 1920x1440? The Gt won't do anything over 1600x1200

The Ultra is not worth the extra 100 bucks unless you run dual LCDs. It is rare to find a GT that doesn't do Ultra speeds stable, and most of the time that is because of the PSU (for instance, there is a definate issue with Antec Truepowers and a lazy rail that make for a lackluster OC on the GT).

Not to thread crap, but people, after all the threads just about screaming at you about PNY and staying away from them, why are you paying retail for their cards? Both BFG and eVGA are shipping GT's at this point, and you'll wait about the same for the Ultra from either company as you would for a PNY pre-order, and you get better support...

the ultra says it needs a 500 watt but i bet that number is padded for the people with crappy psus that are rated higher than they generate. A good 350 watt would probably work fine.

It's not the wattage that counts, it's the quality of the rails.

They changed the date to "Ships Early August" now. For those looking for this card (myself included), check out CompUSA. They have the PNY GeForce 6800 GT listed as available for in store pickup, but it's sold out in my area. Maybe you'll have better luck than me though.

Frys had one left Saturday afternoon. I would expect them to be there again either right now or very soon. I would have bought the last one but i kinda don't wanna pay $33 in sales tax if I can help it.

Oh, and just because you can't find it does not mean it's not there. The two I found Saturday were buried and hidden. Just try looking behind the 9200/5200fx cards.

What brand?

I got the PNY and in the instructions they have Powersupply recommendation from Nvidia.
For a gt/ultra they recommended at least a 350w. 6800 300w.

I wish I knew what was going on with my order. I got a confirmation email back when I ordered it and I was billed but I cant check the status online. I've looked for a phone number for the sales department but cant find one. Their tech support line is completely automated, and there are no support email addresses as far as I know. The online store seems kind of shady to me.
