I actually found it to be the sweet-spot for me. In Sept of '02 I spent like $150 on a ti4200 128mb. Now, with this deal, I got a 5900u 256mb for $145+tax (PM to Frys $179- 10% difference - $30 rebate).

Went to Oxnard, Cali this afternoon and visited BB, CC and Compusa...nada, all blue pcbs. Just get the ATI Radeon 9800 pro for $199 after MIR tomorrow fm BB or PM to CC or Compusa. Got one already so I'm gonna pass on this good deal.

5900SE seems to be a lot like the ti4200 a year ago. You could OC it within spitting distance of the 4600 and pay a lt less. You'll see a lot of 5900SE(XT) 128MB deals over the next few months for less than $150. They should flash to 5950 Ultra speeds amking it the best bang for the buck for a while. If your an ATI fan, you can pay a few more bucks for the 9800Pro. In either case its great deals all around.

If you 're an "early adopter" save your money for the new PCI Express videos cards and the mother board you'll need for it.

ATI cards and software have way too many issues for me. If you don't beleive me then can I suggest you pay a visit to some ATI forums! I'm sure SOMEONE will jump in here and claim they have NEVER had any problems however on a whole ATI cards have alot more compatibility and driver issues than Nvidia cards.

Why would you buy one of these and not a Radeon?

Heh well, ATI's gotten a LOT better lately, although I guess whether it's acceptable or not depends on your long-term experience with video cards...

I for one, remember my firsrt video card that wasn't an onboard card(my first PC came with onboard s3 Trio64V+ graphics with a whopping 1MB of RAM), and it was an ATI card...

And let me just say that if you think for one second that ATI drivers are bad nowadays, I'll tell you that back in the 2MB PCI graphics card days it was definitely NOT pretty.

I've had to more than once reformat and reinstall windows thanks to driver glitches on the old ATI board. The sort of glitches that happen to cause you to not be able to boot into Windows anymore if you want to install the drivers. Oh joy.

Fry's in San Jose, CA had about 25 blue PCBs. Went to Circuit City in San Jose and voila, first one (of about 3 they had) was an ultra. But they charged me $220! Plus tax! Where is Fry's advertising $179? I would like to pricematch to that instead of $199. So far it runs great, overclocked out of the box, but my CPU has issues so I can't play games without overheating right now. =P

Edit: Why did I think it was $199 and not $219? Oh well.

CC has (had?) a $30 MIR. So the hotness was PM'ing to Fry's, then sending in the MIR.

You should feel privilleged ... my local CC only had the Blue PCB's and they were charging $335.00 @ piece for them. No lie, I had a CSR price check it and that was what they rang up. 5900SE's for $335.00, they were insane.

Jyeah!, went to baton rouge,la CC had 2 on shelf, BOTH green pcb/black heatsink hotness, $210 after taxes and $30 MIR (no fry's here), havent gotten it home yet *but* this card will take me till teh PCIE boards/mobo's come down to "normal" levels, plus the 256 ram doesnt hurt either, yeh the "regular" 128mb real SE version may be flashable to 5950's *but* half the ram and *usually* slower ram too, same GPU granted, but $50 for EXTRA 128MB of faster ram (not to mention authentic 5900ultra)sounds about right to me for a TOP end card selling for over $300 currently, mah.

I've been reading a bit about this on other forums & one guy posted that although he had the Green board/Black heatsink 5900U that was packed in as SE box , it was showing 5900se at bootup .

Anyone else notice this ?

That might've been me. I think that PNY flashed these to 5900SE bios from the factory. All that is required is flashing it back
