i was looking at getting the XFX 6600GT for my new comp, but then noticed Comp USA carries the PNY one, which also has dual dvi....are these the same card under a different name? is one better than the other....basically, does the PNY one suck?

only reason i ask is becauase i have a $225 gift card to Ccomp USA that i would like to burn on something that i could actually use....if the PNY one sucks, i will just by the XFX one off of newegg or zipzoomfly or something....

PNY is known to suck. XFX is not known to be good. Therefore I'd get the XFX if I had to pick between the two. But if you have a gift certificate that only applies to the PNY, go ahead and get it. When people say a manufacturer is "bad" it only means not as good as all the others - if PNY cards didn't work they wouldn't sell.

Of course if I really had a choice I'd go for the BFG one (only available at chumbo.com AFAIK).

To my knowledge, most of the complaints about PNY stem from poor image quality. I would suggest that you buy the card and decide what you think. You can always return it.

I have not heard good things about either of them. I hear nothing but bad things about XFX though.

I got a XFX 6600GT AGP when they first came out. My card is great. I haven't had any problems at all. It runs pretty cool and overclocks well. When I got it I noticed the heatsink was different than the picture and I called XFX up to ask them about it and they told me it was the new design. They were very nice. So I would say there customer support has been good so far. Plus it comes with a couple good games. I would say get the XFX. I very happy with mine.

I also have an XFX 6600GT AGP and have nothing but good things to day about it. Mine also overclocks well, and doesn't run hot - what more can you ask for? As for support, the last place I go for tech support is the manufacturer of my products - who knows real world answers better than the folks here at AT? Come on and service? If I have a problem, I'll RMA it back Newegg which I got it from without question or problems.

Again, because your card just so happened to work, doesnt make it a good buying decision.

There are far better choices out there, especially when there are far more complaints about these particular brands with instability, cooling, and support problems.

I've starting to follow all those XFX threads, I wasn't aware that there were instability issues with the card. I believe they addressed the cooling problem though by switching to the new (chrome like) heatsink. I've seen a bunch of lemonheads complain that their cards are running too hot, but from what i've read here their games have no problems and their cards are running in spec. You stick a thermal diode on the product and the ability to monitor the temp and then you have a bunch of paranoid people posting 'Is my xxxx running to hot?'.

As for support, personally I don't wait hours on hold with manufacturer tech reps when I can post online and get an answer quicker (usually). I'll admit I haven't had much experience with XFX before, did some research and hopped on a new bandwagon here.

+1.

I wouldn't touch XFX or PNY with a stick. Leadtek carries my #1 recommendation, followed by eVGA.

Leadtek and BFG have top notch service and support, as does Evga. As for quality, leadtek and bfg have upgraded cooling from the reference design, and BFGs come stock overclocked and still covered by their lifetime warranty. Leadtek and BFG use top notch components and usually overclock very well.

Evga did have some 2d image quality problems back in the day but all those of problems seem to have been resolved since the FX series woes.

I have a PNY 6800GT. The card works great, and I've had it clocked at 401/1120 pretty much from day 1 (I got it from CompUSA as soon as they came in stock). I called their customer service once, and had an extremely short hold time. I asked to have a cd driver disk mailed to me, and the rep I spoke with was courteous, and the disk arrived very soon after the call, with my name on it.

I'm curious how many of the people who have posted negatively about PNY or XFX have actually spoken with their respective customer service reps. I'm not talking about email contact... in my personal experience, even the most highly regarded companies sometimes either ignore or never reply to emails. I'm not sure why, maybe they just get too many emails, and have more staff concentrated on the phones.

Here's an idea, if you're just concerned about initial contact treatment of customers by customer service: Perhaps you may want to give them a call, and suggest that you may be having a problem with your video card, and want to know what to do. See how the CSR treats you. I know it's not exactly legit, but I think it's fair to test their system before you buy their product, especially since a replacement warranty is advertised. Either way, you can come clean and tell the CSR that you just wanted to test their service since you are considering buying their product.

PNY is just a branding company MSI makes all their cards, for a plane jane card their is nothing wrong w/ PNY they all follow the Nvidia Refrence design closely so I don't see why people are bashing it so much, I had a PNY Ti4400 thats still working great to this Day in a 2ndary PC.

WTF? I bought my PNY 6800GT when the 6800Gts pretty much first hit the shelves, and it has been running PERFECT ever since. I have NO problem with PNY cards.

No offence but your remarks of the XFX are not only unintellgible, but far-fetched. Try reading some reviews and comparing them to ATI. Personally, I would like to see ANY card that can out-do the 6600 GT series for the same money ($180 to $195) it takes to buy one. I have an XFX 6600 GT PCIE on my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo and it runs like a F@*king Champ. Easily turns out 70-140 fps on FarCry, Doom3, Half Life2 and UT2004 are a joke, with 1024 by 768 High graphics with Antialising at 4x!!!!! Aside from some heat temps getting to 64 C it literally shames ATI's poorly performing mid-range cards(x700 series... LOL... not even half the card).

If you are anxious for reviews try Tom's Hardware. Hell, even overclockers.com aknowledge the 6600 GT series performance.

Please, if your going to pretend to have knowlege of a subject, either use personal experience with benchmark tests and results or just STFU!!!

I am using the XFX@the moment and it is a nice card so far. Temp hasn't exceeded 65c under sustained load and it idles@50-52c depending on the time of day I check it. I haven't had it long enough to even consider overclocking yet. Having had trouble before with a XFX card that I didn't overclock, I will wait a few months before attempting any so I can't give you the skinny on that. The game bundle is nothing special but for $199 shipped for the AGP version that is OK with me

Im running the exact same card. You are lieing.

Maybe 1024x768 medium settings 4x AA, i still doubt 70-140 in ANY of those titles you listed.

My post wasnt even about the 6600 series, it was about XFX, there is a huge pile of complaints on THIS FORUM about their terrible support and mis-mounted heatsinks.

For PNY i speak from experience, i bought a PNY Ti500 64MB back in the day and the VIVO would only display black and white, after failing to fix it myself i emailed PNY support. They pointed me to a site where i could download beta drivers, and said to try all of those, it was a driver problem causing the problem.

After trying 14 different drivers and using driver cleaner after each one with the same results, i email them again. (hours upon hours, and i knew this wasnt the problem)

They immediatly issue an RMA, it takes them FIVE WEEKS to send me the replacement, all the while im on a Geforce 2 MX 200, I overnighted the defective card to them , fedex.

Their email replies generally took approximately 15-24 hours.
