You need to read some books and watch some videos and maybe take a class.
A folder is a poor self defense item. A pocket knife even more so.

This is my self defense knife...

I also carry a Swiss Champ, and Leatherman Micra for pocketknife duties.

While not exactly suited for self defense I pretty much always carry a swiss army knife. It has helped me out on several occasions

It would be difficult to open while under stress, but if you have a model with a wood saw, it would make a great self defense blade. Having that raked across your face will make you forget about anything nefarious you had in mind.

I love pocket knives and I do collect them. But I live in Houston and we never take a knife to a gun fight. Don't find many knife fights here anymore as they take great skill and massive balls.

Well, I did pick up this one from a Victorinox store in Switzerland for cheap the last time I was there

That's the model I have. I love it, and use it almost every day. Unfortunately I broke the pliers using them inappropriately, but otherwise the knife's been going strong for about 15 years now. I've used Victorinox Swiss Armies since grade school. They're my favorite pocket knife :^)

I always have a knife on me, for utility not protection. I use it constantly both at work and at home.

Yeah - I love their stuff. Great company too. When I was studying German I contacted them and asked if they could send some literature about their company in German for a class project. I was expecting some pamphlets - they sent a whole damn box of stuff (Books on the history of the Swiss Army knife, posters, catalogs etc)!

I prefer Emerson, Al Mar and Bencmade. I also like the Lone Wolf Harsley T2. Actually I like a lot of knives that I am too scared to use because I am a total feeb when it comes to restoring sharpness.

I think we should all carry a pocket knife around with me whenever possible to protect ourselves from hurty fingers. Basically to open boxes and stuff like that.

i liked the two-tone. where did you get the knife at? got mine at a local sporting goods closing sale, i really like gerber knives.

I don't remember where I got the knife from. All I remember is that I ordered it online somewhere.

I like the two tone Bersa also, but it took forever to find any Bers Thunder 380 in stock and the 1st one that came in was the solid blued so I took it rather than keep waiting.

I carry a leatherman skeletool. It's nice because you don't have to open it to get the blade, you can open and close the blade with just one hand.

Not as a defense weapon, but as a tool. I'd rather just take a beating than escalate things by pulling a knife out.

I carry a replaceable blade folding knife most of the time because it's just so darned useful. I've also got a bigger rescue/utility knife like the first one in the OP - that serated section is extremely useful, and is the most likely single feature on a pocket knife to save your life (or someone elses). It will cut pretty much anything, in a pretty big hurry.

Try cutting through a seatbelt with a non-serated knife

I carry a Gerber Evo Serrated.
It's a great knife for $30.

I have a few other similar knives that I carry if I misplace my main knife.

I have a few stag Case knives, but I like the pocket clip folders because they are easily accessible and visible if you look closely. My thinking is that someone is less likely to mug you if they notice you are armed. It's almost like open carry.

I have used my pocket knife thousands of times as a tool and never for self defense.
I still like to have it for defense just in case... zombies attack.

I use this as my river knife. I keep it lashed to my PFD for cutting thigh straps, or other webbing if necessary. Luckily I haven't had to use it yet.

I would not carry a knife for self protection. I have carried a pocket knife for usefulness though. I figure if you feel you need a knife, you probably need to make some moves to put yourself in some safer situations. I don't carry a pocket knife anymore b/c it is a hassle to remember to leave it behind when I fly.

I have a Leatherman Skeletool CX with plain edge blade. It's more for utility than for protection though. The 154CM blade holds its edge very well.

The Razel is very useful. You don't feel bad about using it to pry things anymore. Its a 3" blade.

Not really. I usually have one of these just for utility... opening boxes etc:

Pocket knives are kinda useless for protection, fixed blade would be where it's at i suppose, but they're kind of unwieldy, and they make you look like a cowboy.
