I want to get one. Not one for self protection, but for actually cutting things. I've been looking at byrds cause I'm cheap.

I carry a SOG Flash I, though it's not really for self-protection. I suppose it could be used for that if it came down to it, but it's more of just a utility blade kinda thing for me.

If you want some knife reviews by a guy who knows his shit, check out nutnfancy (he has several Playlists of knife reviews depending on what you're looking for).

As for brands, from what I gather Kershaw, SOG, Benchmade are all usually a pretty good bet. Might be another I'm forgetting too. For shopping, Amazon.com has a lot as well as Your Corner Store.

I carry around an old timer. Probably couldn't do much self protecting with it, but they're handy to have around at times.

I love my Kershaw Chive. Not really for protection, though i'm sure it would be enough to mess someone up, hell a pen could do that. I use it for everyday use, cutting open boxes, trimming cables, etc. Actually on my second chive. Its so small and hard to notice in my pocket I forgot to take it out when going to a concert and had to give it to the guy running the metal detector

A little too custom at $1,725.

Actually a pretty but pretty useless knife. For an everyday folding knife I would get a Barry Wood MK1 hands down. Too bad Barry is retired and less than 1000 were ever made. They can be had at knife shows for around $700.

I wouldn't own a knife with any mechanism that cost less than this though.

For self-defense, you don't want any mechanism; you want a dagger.

A pocket knife really shouldn't be used for protection...

That said, I carry a Gerber Fast Draw spring assisted opening knife.

I'll be upgrading to a similiar Kershaw knife that was in the OP's post.

I have a ton of pocket knives, I carry each one of them at one point or another, but the Gerber is my favorite for how light it is and how it opens.

I have almost that exact model of Buck knife. I don't carry it for self defense but it is useful for many things. Brought it on a camping trip last summer.

Cold steel calls their espada series "pocket sword"
I agree that any knife is a tool of last resort but if that's all you got go for it.

Yea, that's what I mean. I don't carry mine for protection, but it's better than nothing for protection

I love my Chive as well. Could definitely mess someone up as it is quite sharp.

I grabbed a couple of Kershaw Blurs (one with a serrated Tanto blade, the other standard) at their factory sale a week ago.

They have a cool factory and nice employees, FWIW.

I had a larger version of that kershaw when I worked on the water; a serrated blade is a must when you need to cut a line fast or sink!

The one in Wilsonville?

They certainly have some crazy knives like the ET

I’m not sure how practical it is but it sure looks cool. I’m more of a traditionalist myself. Hence the Buck Vantage-pro picture.

It's in Tualatin. They had the ET (AKA "the finger chopper") there, along with a ton of other models. They had boxes and boxes full of knives; it was a great way to kill a few hours.

I grabbed those two Blurs, three Leeks, and a pair of Oso Sweets. The two Oso Sweets are AUS6, but the rest of the knives are Sandvik 14C28N. They had a handful of high-end knives there (including a few ZT knives)...too rich for my blood (even after the crazy discount).

I have a SOG Flash I and Kershaw Skyline. Both quality EDC blades around $30. As a purely EDC blade, I think it's hard to beat the Flash I. It's not good for defensive use but the majority of blades I'd rather not ever have to use defensively.

Some of the knives mentioned are excellent. I'm looking into a Kershaw Blur or SOG Aegis, and something more dedicated to defensive use (Al-mar Eagle).

Best place for blades with wicked prices: www.yourcornerstore.com

Awesome source of reviews: http://www.youtube.com/user/nutnfancy (use his playlists, he has hundreds of reviews)

I'm currently carrying a Colt AR-15-K knife. I want to get an Emerson CQC model but they are expensive. Plus I don't really need a knife atm.
