They collected crowd-sourced data to see where people cross paths so that they can identify common/public areas. That's why so many Pokemon gyms are at churches.

Also, they just choose historic and similar places anyway. Most locations in the game were previously "Portals" in Niantic's last AR game. It's not necessarily about how many visit an area - there was one that was leading people to get injured in that earlier game (or get themselves killed - can't remember), so they removed it.

The Google data thing is only on iOS - they have granular permissions for Google accounts on Android.

Either it was an oversight or there's something different between the two platforms that requires more access from Google, perhaps because they can't get certain data from iOS as easily compared to Android? I don't know.

I just created a regular account - I usually prefer not linking my google or other social accounts to sites and create unique accounts.

SLAYING n00bs - More power to him. I'm kind of weirdly entertained by reading all these articles about this game but having never played it. I did however crush the original on my gameboy COLOR back in the day. I'm just waiting for the first disaster to strike from this ridiculousness. At that point I will hit peak entertainment and pour myself a glass of whiskey to enjoy.

If you took it at face value, like you claim, then you would have seen the obviously fake banner at across the top and would have noticed the obvious low-hanging-fruit headline from an unknown news source and been discriminating enough to AT LEAST look at their other headlines.

Sheesh. Gullible people. No doubt, there will be real stories about similar Pokemon Go incidents so I don't even see how it could be amusing to fake them.

News flash: half of the news you see shared on Facebook is just as fake. The fact that "it isn't The Onion" is what makes it even stupider when people share it.

No kidding. Just saw another post today that far too many people were taking at face value: The bloody Russians developed some asinine "treatment" that allows one to soften and remove dark skin so you can blend in with the whites. D:

I mean... I was dumbfounded. Then I read the article and was flabergasted. Then I realized I was on facebook and should expect nothing less. People frighten me.

This is why we need to have cell & WiFi jammers.
These idiots are looking at their phone, not paying attention where they are walking / riding / biking, and caused all sorts of problems today.

Was at the mall, and there was a pack (20+) of kids from 12-17 all looking at their phone walking around like they own the place. They run into people, small kids, people with strollers... they just don't care.
Was a real mess. The mall "security" guards were a joke, they would tell them to leave, and they just kept on playing the game. Finally, someone called the cops, and they broke up this crowd.

Outside the mall was just as bad, people slamming on their brakes trying to get to some location, speeding around the parking lot trying to catch whatever.

I counted 6 accidents outside, with one idiot leaving the scene to go catch whatever, and his friends were cheering him on.

Sigh.

Right. Because everybody with a smartphone was genius and attentive right before Pokemon Go came out.

You don't have to read "everything" on the page. You only have to question what you are reading and look at the big freakin' banner to answer that. It seems that you even read the comments, which is WAY further than I was willing to go after glancing at the banner so it seems odd you'd try to shame me for bothering to look further than the body of the article.

I read it when someone posted to a Nintendo Facebook group. I was reading it out loud to my roommate and my brother. Early on in the article, there was something suspect...but I still thought it could be real until I got to the part where they had a comment from one of the accident victims. At that point, I announced to the people around me: "Sorry. This is absolutely fake." Then I looked up that site's reputation and also saw other comments calling it "fake."

(Which I didn't really need any additional confirmation)
