Useless? That's borderline trolling. For $79, you can get a significantly BETTER experience at 1200p than Xbone (900p) and PS4 (1080p) in RotTR (30fps with dips) and Division (30fps with dips). While also getting over 100fps in esports titles (most played games in the world).

Besides, if you pair it with a FreeSync display, that helps hide frame rate dips. Can't wait to see better reviews with frame times and other settings, etc.
Yeah, but the consoles aren't at low settings (closer to medium/high), and the Xbox One version of RotR at least only drops down in a few areas, and not that much. Most of the time, you have a smooth 30. Plus it actually operates at 1080p. Although there is the issue of the input latency on consoles in that particular game. The Division is also a near-perfect 30 FPS on both.

It's not useless in a vacuum, as it can probably about deliver console experience if you cap it at 30 and up some of the settings, but it is sort of useless considering the RX 460 (sometimes can be had for $60, 2GB) and NV competitors. Really low-end cards never made much sense; no one would buy, say, a 750 over a 750 Ti just because the value on the latter was much better, and because it was straddling that console performance line, the extra performance of the higher-end card goes further.

There's really no argument one can make when comparing old/discontinued models vs brand new models. I mean, if you go that route, you can justify spending $150 on an R9 290 from ebay and stand back and say "Wow, that RX 550 really sucks compared to this 290!" Or better still you can be like RandomGaminginHD and dumpster-dive to find deals and completely annihilate any perf/$ ratio. I love deals and can find some great deals and better performing GPUs for less money or a little bit more money, but I'm going to have to trade something else that's valuable to me: power usage, encode/decode support, display connectivity, API enhancements, form factor, noise, heat...

What's silly about all of this is that we probably wouldn't be complaining nearly as much about the RX 550 if it were just $10 less.

XFX Radeon RX 550 Core (single-slot, full-height) and Low-Profile models: https://videocardz.com/68901/xfx-and-asl-launch-low-profile-graphics-cards
Whoa! Of even more interest from that link is that ASL GTX 1050 Ti Battle Flag! Low-profile, single slot! Of course, it will probably cost $169.

Did you guys think AMD was lying!? it says right there in the slide, 3rd gen finFET 14.

I don't trust AMD's marketing team as far as I can throw them, but they aren't going to straight up lie.
Anandtech said:
In the case of fab yields, all of the revised Polaris chips are being manufactured on what AMD is calling the “Latest Generation FinFET 14” process. This is a bit of a mouthful, but in short it’s AMD calling attention to the improvements partners GlobalFoundries and Samsung have made to their 14nm LPP processes in the last year. Yields are up and overall chip quality is better, which improves the average performance (clockspeed & power) characteristics of the chips. Both foundries have also been making other undisclosed, small tweaks to their lines to further boost chip quality. It’s not a new fab process (it’s still 14nm LPP) but it’s an improvement over where Polaris 10 production started nearly a year ago.

The 460 is hardly old or discontinued; it has the same features and similar power profile to the 550, but performs more convincingly at or above console level and for basically the same price. Let's face it: barely above 40 FPS average at 1080p low in RotR is not console level. The 560 is likely in a similar position.

It's good if you want the connectors, but there are much better options for gaming.

I got 20fps at low in ROTR with GT730 gddr5 (Kepler) so this card is twice as fast. Now if only it was the same price ($60)

Yes it is discontinued - hence the dwindling supply, replacement part (560), and rebates.
In name only, and they are still available. We'll see the 560 at value parity soon and the 550 will fall by the side, just like 750 did back in 2014/2015. It's just not fast enough.

In case anyone is getting tired of the 550 talk, here are two more reviews:

Thanks for posting the video. If AMD had priced this at $60 or even $70 this would have been a great card for the price.

750 was $120 at launch while 750Ti was $150 and the performance difference was only 20% while 560 will be around 60-70% faster.
Also 550 almost matches 750Ti in DX12 and AMD optimized games which honestly surprised me.
However in DX11 ,its still too slow.At $60 or $70 this would have been be good value.

Yeah, but the 750 wasn't given much love; no deals on it, no great aftermarket versions, etc. At launch, it might have made sense, but the 750 Ti was selling better and got more aggressive coupons/rebates while the 750 was forgotten. I think we'll see the same with 550 vs 560.

4K TVs are $600 now.

But yes, if I buy a $3K LG OLED then I'm not going to worry about $80 vs $130 for a GPU.

I am actually in this situation (well, might be) in that I'm looking at the $2000 B6 LG OLED. The reason I'd go with the 550 is because it is the cheapest 4k 60 Hz 4:4:4 card out there. I have zero need in this potential computer for anything faster as there is nothing I envision my wife ever playing on it that would tax the card. If she games, she'd do it on her lap top.

Though if I thought she'd actually play WoW on it, I'd certainly spend the $ for something better.

On the other hand, I'll probably shove my RX480 in there instead of selling it when I upgrade to Vega (assuming Vega is good). At least I can get some benefit for having a reference blower card as the case has poor cooling.

I just crossflashed my MSI RX480 Gaming X to RX580 using the bios of the MSI RX580 Gaming X, no issues.

And in case anyone wonders, in case of brick, cards can be unbricked by flashing them again booting up with an IGP or a secondary dgpu.

Does anybody knows when 560 are launching? My aging board is getting long in the tooth and since I game only World of Tanks and Civilization, I figured that would be enough for a 1080p 40+ experience. I was ready for 460 but just when I wanted to buy, 560 rumors arrived. 560 seems a bit higher performance at same price so it seems a nice upgrade over my 6670

AMD is doing it wrong... why they created those card on insanely high prices?

Polaris is a that bad uARCH?

nVIDIA is not doing better either with the not so good drivers right now.

And Intel iGPU... poor Intel... they got demoted heavily to extra.

Try... $199(!).

At least, that's what I paid for my second 40" 4K UHD TV from Newegg, around Black Friday last year. The first one (identical) was around $220.

So, yeah, I got not just one, but TWO 4K UHD TVs, for a little under $420 shipped. Such a deal!

They don't do 4K60 4:4:4. Only 4K30 4:4:4, and 4K60 4:2:0, apparently. But they are great, overall, especially for the price. Works for me. I use them for ordinary desktop tasks. The added desktop resolution is great!

Those RX 550 cards would work great with these UHD TVs, for 4K desktop work. If I didn't already have RX 470 cards in the two boxes hooked up to them, then I would consider the RX 550 or 560. (Originally, I had an RX 460 4GB Nitro card in this rig.)

So... I see RX 550, RX 570, and RX 580 cards at Newegg. Where's the RX 560 (Polaris 11 fully unlocked?) Interested in one of those for my friend.

I recon a G4560 + RX 560 4GB, plus 2x4GB DDR4-2400, a B150 mobo, and a cheap 1TB HDD, will make a good "console killer" rig, for under $500 incl. OS.
You can squeeze an RX 470 in there if you get your Windows license from a merchant ($10-20). That's a Pro console killer.

Eh. RX 560 kills the Xbone, but while it's faster than the PS4 in flops, it has less bandwidth and a much smaller pixel fillrate. It should be quite comparable to a PS4, and far behind the PS4 Pro of course. Better described as a console equivalent.

RX570 when overclocked matches the RX480. This is the $170 model. Great value. An 8GB model for under $200 would be perfect seeing as how RX580 is still $250 .
