I got the BTC drive from Fry's on Black Friday, and so far I've had no major probs. I would be PISSED since CDRwin doesn't support it but luckily the latest Nero does everything I've thrown at it which makes me a happy camper. The only prob I've had is that it seems to be VEEEEEERY processor intensive as it takes 6-8 minutes to burn at 40x speed (burning on a p2/500) as it slows down my computer to a crawl. I might not be able to do anything when burning yet I'll take it anyday over my old crappy 6x Yamaha that'd underrun with coasters regularly. I wouldn't mind snagging a LiteOn (/w no AR BS) but everytime I attempt to get one in the area, it's sold out. That's what you get when you live in a tech-savvy area.

What area do you live in? I used to be in Northern VA, and everything went out fast. Since moving to LA I was pleasently suprised to find most deals easily accesible.

If you aren't concerned about beating the latest copy protections on video games, then the truth is that all the cheap burners are of comparable quality...That means a BTC drive is basically about as good as a Lite-On, if all you want to do is write data discs or copy regular CDs.
