The police in Phoenix have opened an investigation into allegations that a woman in a vegetative state at a private nursing facility was sexually assaulted and gave birth to a child last month, the authorities said Friday.

A Hacienda HealthCare spokesman said on Friday that the organization “stands fully committed to getting to the truth of what, for us, represents an unprecedented matter.”

“We have recently become aware of a deeply disturbing incident involving the health and safety of a Hacienda resident,” said the spokesman, David Leibowitz. “While federal and state privacy laws prohibit us from publicly discussing a patient’s health or case, Hacienda has and will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and all the relevant regulatory agencies regarding this matter.”

When I first heard about this I thought "Well at least that will be a comfort for the family". Then I realized that she hadn't been in an accident and they kept her alive till the child was born.

I don't believe they can require it but for those that don't give voluntarily there are other means of obtaining it. Add in all the advances in familial matches from government and private databases and there is a pretty good chance they'll get him. That's if it's one of the staff. If another patient did this than it's a different story. From what I read most wouldn't be competent enough to give consent. Don't know what will happen there. Even if they find the person, whether or not he would be able to stand trial is up in the air.

I hope they catch the perpetrator, but I wouldn't wish for them to get raped. How we treat people under our custody is a reflection of us, as a society. It's pretty despicable that prison rape continues to be a problem and that people so casually throw it around like people 'deserve' it.

This is getting off topic but I wholeheartedly agree. When in the custody of the state your safety shouldn’t be in question. It’s morally wrong and certainly doesn’t help rehabilitating them back into society

Talk about negligent practice, that place needs a full investigation.
