That appears to be in the original article but it bears repeating. The student may have saved (future) lives by killing that guy.

Rice had a criminal record a mile long, and had pulled a gun on a cop in the past. Seriously, I tend to believe the kid when he says it was self defense. This wasn't a "OMG someone is in my garage, I must kill!"

I'm glad I live in the US where I can defend myself and not be prosecuted, not in the UK where the general motto is "Take it up the ass and hope the police do something".
