it works!! (I tried to make a poll in another thread, but it wouldn't allow voting. Note to self: don't hit back and edit answers when making polls)

I'm closest to "I am Anti-war, but now that it's started, it must be finished according to stated goals(elimination of WMD and removal of Saddam). To fail now would be disastrous." but I would need some major rebuilding efforts on the part of uninvolved 3rd parties to be included.

My opinion hasn't changed since 3 months ago: I don't want to go to war, but in this one we are totally justified in doing what we are doing.

LOL, yeah, but that's the problem with anything done by committee. We had such a large coalition that we were forced to accede to their wishes and not oust Saddam, only kick him out of Kuwait and let diplomacy do the rest. As is usual when 100 people make a joint decision, it was completely half-@$$ed and the job was left unfinished.

But I do have a question for everyone copping out and picking the noncommital "Some wars are justifed and necessary, this one was premature." answer

Saddam has had 12 years to disarm - He didn't
Saddam has had 12 years to accede to UN sanctions - He didn't
Saddam has had 12 years to to stop building WMDs - He didn't
Saddam has had 12 years to to stop murdering those who oppose him - He didn't
Saddam has had 12 years to to stop promoting the killing of all Americans - He didn't
Saddam has had 12 years to to feed his people - He didn't
Saddam has had 12 years to to provide needed medicines to his people - He didn't
Saddam has had 12 years to stop shooting at US planes enforcing the UN mandates - He didn't
Saddam has had 12 years to allow FULL ACCESS to UN inspectors - He didn't

Exactly how premature was this war? How long do you think we should have given him?

Remember, the attack on baghdad would have been a lot more messy without the smart bombs we have today. I agree that Bush Sr. and Co. failed in the first war, but imagine the kind of carnage that would have happened with old fashioned bombing campaigns.

Plus, the last war we had been in was Vietnam. Now we have "victories" in Gulf War1 and Afghanistan behind us. We're finally ready to use non-special ops ground troops again.

Of course, back in the old days, conquering armies sacked and destroyed the entire city under siege... which we could easily do if we wanted.

You may see some carnage yet if we get to go door to door in Baghdad. I suppose its time for us to bite the bullet and get used to seeing some BIG casualty lists before too long. America has gotten too used to sanitized warfare. The media cries over every soldier who dies, but realistically we lost more killed in car accidents last week than soldiers dead on the battlefield. If you check the last few rounds of house to house we went through, losses numbered in the hundreds and thousands.

So get used to the idea! (Don't have to like it though)

good points jolyon33 although I'm surprised at the light casualties up to this point. I can't see baghdad falling without some significant losses but the unexepected...for better or for worse....seems to be the norm in this war.

good poll, btw

Failed? Failed how? To remove Saddam from power? That was not the goal of the 1991 Gulf War. The goal was to remove Saddam from Kuwait.

Yeah but the OPriginal Bush promised the Iraqi's that we would back their play and when the Iraqi's rose up we abandoned them like sniveling cowards (well Bush and his Admin did)

Unchanged for months . . . since it was obvious Bush was preparing for war.

And SOME wars are necessary; this one NEEDED United Nations support to be truly successful.

I'd say the Iraqis would rise up and overthrow Saddam if they saw their Arab brothers from other Muslim nations there in the Coalition to liberate them.

for a refreshing change, red's right on the money! Bush and his boys left the Iraqis out to dry while he went back to playing golf. We should never have let saddam stay in power, but we weren't willing to lose any american blood over it... "not purdent at this juncture." So we get to deal with it now and have the world hate us for it.

Whenever I hear people complaining about how many innocent iraqis are killed, I remind myself that the US could kill every person living between the Tigris and Euphrates if it wanted to. That's what the Romans would have done.

I'm hoping to post the same poll ever week until baghdad falls and see how attitudes change as time goes on.

You need one that says "I think I'm smarter than everyone else and I'm always right."
