I think anyone engaged in this kind of activity should be banned. It's one thing to be a rabid fan of a particuilar video card and another when you are being compensated for it. How does this really work? Do you get recognition for starting threads and bashing the other manufacturers?

Bad idea. The people engaged in this should be brought to the forfront and their activities and envolvement should be highlighted somehow so the they arent allowed to push people to purchace a product in a public forum.

BUY ADVERTISING.

All of this has made me wonder why ATI went after NVIDIA's newest card here instead of just exposing the "virus" ...unless of course they didn't want to bring attention to their own "strain" of the outreach program.

In any case everybody should do their research before buying: caveat emptor.

Edit::

Just an after thought: What do you suppose TheInq relationship is in this viral outreach program?

This is pretty interesting stuff, and might partly explain why the video forums have been buzzing with slant lately.

nVidia was caught with its pants down on this one with a really easy "paper trail" and i'd say its supporters are likewise embarassed . . . some probably even p o'd they didn't get free stuff for their loyalty.

[evidently] it wasn't supposed to be made public . . . nVidia left a sloppy trail to their viral marketeers . . .

and it's 'made public' because it's a horrible trend and a very dishonest way to "advertise". . . . like breaking news on a scandal.

Read the ENTIRE link . . . it's just excerpted here.

Meh. I knew something like this would pop up eventually about NVIDIA. Seeing as how ATi has had all of the "negative attention" lately, I was just waiting for something like this to happen . Go ahead and make fun of my NVIDIA Fanboi-ish name all you want too, LOL. I didn't choose it, my friends decided to give me that title, along with "Conformist Bastard" (for being an at-the-time die-hard Intel fanboi as well as an NVIDIA fanboi, LOL).

No, BTW, I'm not on the NVIDIA payroll (though I wish I was sometimes, to help me with college ).

This news doesn't surprise me in the least, and it certainly explains a lot of why the Video forums have been going downhill for a long time now. Anyone who posts or reads here even somewhat often will probably have a few names come to mind immediately, and one in particular who seems to be the worst offender (or "best", from Nvidia's perspective) - one who not surprisingly has completely avoided this thread thus far.

As others have said, no naming names should be necessary at all (and would probably get this thread locked, even if it's the truth) - but unfortunately those casual users who visit here less frequently (and indeed those probably the most ready to listen to advice from these types of people), probably know nothing about it at all.

I'm wondering why he hasn't posted here yet...

Well, I think that those people would also like to become powerful members in those forums (like admins, mods etc) and have power to delete and edit posts against them, and pro-other company posts, or against their company or some other stuff, who knows...

That makes no sense... Because that wouldn't happen OR work. Why? Take me for example. I have mod experience (I'm a Mod at Tweaks R Us), and there's ALWAYS someone above you (unless, of course, you start your own site, and are the Admin). If I were to do something like that, like deleting people's posts about ATi (or another company I don't like), the Admins would be ALL OVER ME about it, and if I kept it up, I would likely get banned for good. Of course I might be able to get away with 1 or 2 things before the Adminst caught wind of it, but it would likely stop there. If He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named became a Mod, and started pulling crap like that, he would likely be (quickly, I imagine) revoked of his Mod priviledges, and perhaps banned (if not temporarily, likely for good). That's why I wouldn't mind He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named to be a Mod, as I know he wouldn't get away with things like that. However (not to be a jerk), I wouldn't expect EVERYONE to understand this, as not EVERYONE has Mod experience (again, not trying to be a jerk). It's a simple fact of rules. Being a Mod is a privilege, not a right, so anyone who IS a Mod, takes that into consideration, and does their best to be Fair and Just. That's why I believe He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named would do fine being a Mod .

dude see my previous post.

your making out this is some major insider scandle jobbie that was hidden from the world. the fact that company names are listed for all to see on AEG's site suggests otherwise. the infos been there for awhile....

and to be fair, who's to say that everyone here isnt part of some marketing scheme like this

this is the internet, and for all i know you could be spreading good word about AMD in exchange for goods, jiffy could be with intel, munky with ATI, xtknight with Volari lol....

the only thing this effects is the people that take forum gossip/advice as gospel when deciding on a purchase, and well if your stupid enough to do that then you deserve to buy the wrong product.

though at this point in time it must be siad that you cant really fall off buying from either side. its a good time to be in.....you can buy red or green and your gonna get a good product.

there isnt one product from either team that literally outshines the other.

Many corporations are run like military campaigns, and propaganda is an effective tactic employed by both. This tactic certainly isn't new, but perhaps the application is more contemporary.

I wonder though, will this information do any good here? Will it indeed lead to members doing better research on prospective purchases and seek out more opinions first? If so that is a positive. However, isn't a potential negative impact of this, that we will see even more polarization here, as some vie to make themselves attractive to these corporations in an attempt to "get in on the free stuff" now that they are aware that such opportunities do exist?

Regardless, one thing is certain, there are members here pushing agendas, personal and otherwise, and they aren't so well hidden as they evidently think

I don't believe any hardware reviews anymore, and if a forum member constantly hypes ONE particular company, he loses credibility to me. Like some members pushing how great their FX cards were over the 9700/9800 Radeons, back in the day.

While the original post about these marketing techniques is interesting news, it also seems like some folks are just eager to get a tempest in a teapot going. I think that explains the quality of some the "discussions" on this forum as much as any theory about marketeers in our midst. Let's face it, trolls and fanboys have a long and venerable history online, long before any marketing company came along to try and harness it.
