Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening,
I am planning on building a system and I don't know whether to get an Athlon or a Pentium III. Which one is better and why?
And one more thing - Whats the difference when someone offers me:
1.) AMD Athlon 1000
2.) AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 1000

Here we go again. There's a Slot A Athlon that has 512k off die cache. The cache doesn't run at full speed. The Thunderbird Athlon is Socket A (There are some Slot A Tbirds out there, too) with 256K full speed on die cache. The Tbirds are newer and faster. I say go with the Athlon over the PIII. Athlon is where the action is. Intel is going to phase out PIIIs at the end of this year. (Which is stupid. They're going to be selling P4s and Celerons. They'd do better by killing off the Celeron and making PIIIs their budget chip.)

The Thunderbird Athlon has its Level-2 cache memory on the core and is available in SocketA form, a flat square CPU with pins all over the bottom. The "classic" Athlon has the L2 cache memory separate from the CPU core, sitting next to it on a rectangular circuitboard in a plastic case, and that is called "SlotA" format. You should get the SocketA Thunderbird Athlon and get a motherboard with a VIA KT133 or KT133A chipset, or the new KM133 microATX format if you intend to build a microATX system (not what most people would do). Bottom line, get the SocketA Thunderbird Athlon, if you're getting a Athlon.

go with the Athlon Thunderbird 1000 Mhz, you get better overclocking and is cheaper than the PIII.

On the other hand, why not kill the Celerons and make the P4 their budget chip?

AMD Tbird 1ghz. Cheaper than the P3, higher proformance, and can (with pencil trick) be unlocked to allow multiplier manipulation.

They can't make P3's as their budget chip because they cost more to make than a Celeron. They need a cheap CPU to compete with the Duron, and the Celeron is it. P4's will be priced lower by the end of this year, so, it only makes sense to phase out the P3, which is getting long in the tooth anyway.

AMD is definitely the way to go I am currently running a TBird 1000 @ 1350. Can you unlock the multiplier on a PIII? NO! LOL. Thunderbird over the vanilla athlon. It's cheaper, faster, more overclockable. Make sure you get a good mobo to go with it though!

you might want to hold off on either for the time being. i think you will see athlons drop in price a bit with their new athlons with 266 fsbs and the p4s coming out. the gigahertz is the way to go, but can you wait a few weeks?
