2. Used to be Voom and OTA, but now just OTA.

3. Absolutely! Especially since an antenna is like $25, and those Samsung OTA HDTV receivers were $99 when Best Buy decided no longer to carry them.

4. Huge difference, even on ED displays. It's not only a resolution difference, but also bandwidth. It was a much bigger difference than I anticipated.

I think I love yo... er love your taste in electronics.

So what's the deal with the projectors, how do they compare with LCDs and DLPs. I have roughly about 4k to spend on a display device and I would like to find something I could use for standard viewing (non HD content) DVDs, video games and of course HD programs. Basically I want an all purpose display device. Any suggestions on what would be best between DLP, LCDs and projectors?

Front projection systems really rock, especially for HD. However, you need very good ambient light control (the room, especially near the screen, must be dark) to make it worth it. Video game playing is loads of fun on the big screen.

What's your room like? How big is it? How far back are you sitting? How's your ambient light control?

The room I will be using has about 6 huge windows (from floor to ceiling) so my light control is not as great as I would like it. Although I guess I could get some type of blinds or curtains, as far as size its roughly about 20x25.

Since I'm asking for suggestions what would you suggest for a 20-30" HD TV under 500 or 600 bucks? This one will be used for basically video games and DVDs

I have Dish Network's high definition package but it's programming is disappointing and IMO does not justify the premium. DiscoveryHD lacks content as well and for those of you who were hoping to catch lots of nature wildlife features, as I was, will be let down. I'm not much of a sports fan but ESPNHD has what appears to be upconverts of their regular ESPN feed. Very rarely is there anything worth watching that's not already on the SD channels, until championships in NHL or NBA (generalizing here). TNTHD has some good movies but their transfers seem to be fair, nothing spectacular.

Don't get me wrong, when there are good HD being shown, it is stunning almost lifelike. But those times are few and in between. I haven't had the chance to attach a UHF antenna to my 811 receiver for OTA HDTV shows but I don't watch my locals anyway. HD does blow DVD out of the water. No questions asked.

I have found much more use out of my set by plugging in my laptop via vga-out and watching content from that. I'll likely build a dedicated HTPC for it.

My personal suggestion for a room of that size & light control, with a $4k budget would be:

1. Some sort of digital technology based TV. Go to Best Buy, see if you can see rainbows with DLP RPTV's. Either DLP's or LCOS/D-ILA will probably be your best bet. I'd suggest the 52" Toshiba DLP or the 52" JVC. Both great TV's. Both are definitely better than the Samsung HLN or even HLP (HD3) DLP sets.

2. If you're thinking OTA, get the LG LST-3510A for DVD & OTA HD. Great unit

If you want to try to control your ambient light with curtains, then there are a lot of great projector choices in your budget. Infocus SP5000, Panasonic PT-AE500u, Sanyo Z2.

Do you know what those TVs accept? (720p, 1080i, etc) Also would you know what their native display is? Finally one last question do either of those sets have a 60" version? I would like to get the biggest screen possible even if means going over my budget a bit.

Does'nt Dishnet have movies channels in HD? I would think those should have some pretty good shows, but then again maybe not.

Ah forgot to mention that they do have other HD channels ie. HBOHD and I did have it included as part of the HD package for about 3 months and generally the transfers were pretty good but nothing stunning. I wasn't interested with the material HBO offered so never watched their shows.

But, I'll admit that the best HD-show off material came from DiscoveryHD first and ESPN-HD second.

Yeah, there's the JVC HD-61Z575, which is a 61" D-ILA set. Amazing TV. Don't worry about what it accepts, because your HD set top box will be able to output your choice of resolutions. However, it does accept both 720p & 1080i. It's 1280x720 progressive native.

Picked up an LG LST3510A a few weeks ago, right now I just watch unencrypted QAM signals, it totally rocks, no need for OTA right now. Comcast has a lot of unencrypted signals (Discovery HD Theater is the best!).

Watching this on a Panasonic PT50LC13 (LCD RPTV). A good value for the money (I paid under $2200 a year ago for it). Would have bought a DLP RPTV, but they were too expensive at the time, this set will last me for a while I think

Living Room:
Toshiba 57H81
Voom (check out www.voom.com)

Bedroom
Sony KP46WT510
Panasonic HD Tuner (Direct TV receiver - only use for OTA channels). Don't have VOOM hooked up to this one yet...

Yes

HD picture is definitely sharper, but progressive scan is still great....once you get used to HD, it is hard to watch analog tv...

Voom is cool; I am jealous. I just have OTA, and only things that I go out of my way to watch are nature shows on PBS and football games.

D-VHS is the tape based recorder you're referring to. The media is kind of expensive, but it's been on the market a little while and it works well. Your only other option is a hard drive based recorder, but obviously any sort of portability is lost when the content is on a single massive hard drive.

There are currently no recorders in the United States that can write in HD to optical media. Blu-ray and HD-DVD are two competing formats that should hit our market next year and will hold significantly more than the 9GB of current DVDs (50 and 30GB, respectively). Though technically neither of these formats are DVDs, per se, and will not work in your current DVD player.

ummm, DVD burner can burn HD content.

but it has to be computer based - work with file, burn, play. its rudimentary but can be done.

Just not in real time.
