Yes, I earned Eagle in the middle 70's as a member of troop 529.
We were sponsored by Lutheran Church of the Master located in Brooklyn Center, MN.
It was a long time ago but I am still proud of it.

OA = Yes

Mormon??? = Not even close.

Gays? = How about don't ask, don't tell, and keep it in your pants.
Some of the people made us wonder but they never made sexual advances on anyone that I know of.
We did not want to hear about our scoutmasters sex lifes at all, whether gay or straight.

The first time I smoked dope was on a Boy Scout campout.
I'm not proud of it, but it is the truth.

no way.

i went to scouts b/c i had camped all my life and thought it would be cool to go camp with other people. but it just sucked. i stayed in for 2 months to see if my first campout was a bad apple in the bunch or something, but no...it all sucked.

way too much regulation and organizational crap. i did much more interesting camping and wilderness survival with a group of friends. no one trying to force us to do stuff we didn't need to do, or tell us how to live.

Got busy after college and dropped it! Writing Eagle scout on your resume is definatly helpful, tells your employers that you are dedicated in following through with something. I just got a job (graduated last fall)...anything that gives you an edge is necessary to meet the saturated market! I love getting a recurring income!

Congrat's to the Eagle Scout's that takes a lot of work, you should be proud of your accomplishment. How many went on to Explorers?

Eagle Scout - Troop #1 Portsmouth, RI (OA and multiple high adventure trips)

Mormon - nope (don't think there were any of them in my troop either)

Scouting - a great experience that has helped me along in life, but i can say that back in high school when i got the award i was embarrassed to be in the paper (*gosh* what if the girls see this)

Questionable membership - i'd rather have a don't ask don't tell when it comes to gays and atheists. scouting builds character, and both homosexuals and gays could benefit (as well as most anyone else).

Honestly, I think you're making a good point, but you're arguing one side of this debate and I'm looking at getting to the compromise between the two ASAP. Why? Because I'd like every boy who's responsible and interested in scouting to have the chance.

No, I definently do NOT think that there should be the type of awards you mentioned above. I think that a comprimise is in order as well, and sooner is better than later. However, a comprimise does NOT mean that the gay scouts never mention their sexuality while the straight scouts get to talk about their sexuality as much as they want since they're the majority, or what is accepted. The BSA administration claim that there is no room for sexual matters within the BSA, thus homosexual scouts should not be permitted to talk about their sexuality (let alone be members). However, even though the leaders say that sex should not be discussed, etc. the straight kids will invariably talk about sexual matters (as teens often do).

My point is that straight people want to be able to talk about their sexuality as much as they want, but they don't want homosexuals to be able to talk about their sexuality. It is only "don't ask - don't tell" for a certain segment of the population. That is NOT a comprimise, it is discrimination.
