Some of the results I'm seeing are less than exciting when compared to dual core AMDs such as my oc'd Opty 165. Also, the lack of native 64-bit support is of concern. Not a big deal right now, but in a year or two's time it could be.
Umm, where did you come up with the lack of 64bit support? Conroe/Merom/Woodcrest all have 64bit....
I said *native* support. I could be wrong, but doesn't Conroe have just EMT64 which isn't true 64-bit processing.

EM64T is the same thing as AMD's 64bits..if you want a true full 64bit CPU get an Itanium but you won't be able to do much with it..

AMD64 and EMT64 are true 64 bit processors. They run in 3 modes...32bit, Hybrid, and 64bit. While they aren't exclusive 64bit processors, they are true 64bit processors.

The only difference here between AMD64 and EMT64 is in the chipsets...AMD use a hardware based IOMMU (built into the on-die Northbridge) and Intel doesn't. That's why AMD runs better in 64bit (and why there was a problem with Linux and EM64T when it was first released...before the software patch).

That is ofcourse unless I can OC it to near 4ghz....

or you could quad conroe heh... anyhow i think i'll personally wait til duvie or mark tears the thing apart and benches b4 i even decide on moving to a conroe. Their the ones responsible for me buying this X2 over a pentium d.

Thanks for the kudos. I am sure one of us will get one and bench it and compare to our XZ's just for fun !

nope. i'll keep my current system for a long time (atleast 4 years) maybe upgrade the vid card with a G80/R600 variatant or maybe a x1900gt when its under 150 bucks.

I think that when Conroe comes around, my old Duron 500 or whatever it is might be up for the curb However if AMD is better (who knows), I might get that instead.
And to those who don't think you will be able to get Conroe over 3.0Ghz on air, they do have Woodcrest (server version) stock at 3Ghz.

I'm going to keep squeezing what I can from my AXP 3200+ @2420MHz system and hold out until I see what AMD brings to the table with their next-gen chips.

And even then, I like this old system. It's a keeper.

Oh yeah. 2.4 prescott (non-HT) with 1 gig of ram to the fastest conroe with (hopefully) 4 gigs of ram. Yeah...I'm upgrading.

Right on to that.

Now at some point, a Merom laptop (Mobile Conroe) might be a very nice upgrade...

One thing Intel's done well for a long time, since Pentium-100 days at least, is multiprocessing.... just on separate cores, dies and sockets... Two Conroes sounds pretty scary.

I can't afford it. Even if I could, I'd keep my current PC for a while longer (P4 2.53, GF4 Ti4200)

I havent decided on anything. Until I know what motherboard I want, im not going to jump to conclusions. While both CPUs look really good from the hype, unless the right board is out, Im out.

Until my X2 4400 and 7800gtx starts to suffer I don't think I'll make the plunge to something new. I reckon on about mid way throug next year when I make the move to something new. Possibly a Power Mac Conroe with OS X Leopard if its out.

Edit: Someone beat me to it.

Nevermind.

Anyway.
With the 3Ghz+ Conroe chips being released [and probably in decent quantities], odds are the chips have plenty of headroom.

3Ghz should be possible. 3.3; as well.

Anything above that is going to require luck-of-the-draw [Just like current AMD chips. Most people with an X2/Opty 165 [I use the slash because IMO, the chips are equal now that they both use SSOI..] can hit 2.6 [FX-60] and a bit beyond [2.8]; but anything much higher than that [3.0] is sheer luck [or a nice phase/sub-ambient setup].

Unfortunately, I just recently did a whole new build. The good thing is my current build will do just fine for quite some time. My Intel 975X seems to be a revision short of the revision that has been speculated to support Conroe, so that is just something I'll have to live with.
I find myself changing from being a "die hard enthusiast" to just a average ole "Joe" that just wants a system that works, and when it works, don't buy anything new until there is a need for it. I guess thats a result of old age, even though I'm far from it

Questions for you...
1. Why do you expect decent quantities?
2. When do you think that 3 GHz will actually ship?

First, prices may not really be that for Conroe, we will see when it all happens. Second, platform cost, as in motherboard could also be a lot more for Intel. And lastly, without final shipping hardware, and multiple site doing reviews, all these previews don't make me feel comfortable.

BUT: If the prices are close, the benchmarks are close and the platform is not more than $50 difference, I might get one also. Thats a LOT of ASSumptions.

You mean that these prices seem to good to be true right? Yah, I kind of feel the same way. But if they are accurate, and Intel is willing to make this kind of sacrifice for several quarters just to gain back as much market share as possible that they lost to AMD over the last few years, then that would be pretty amazing..

Same here. My 2.6 kinda drags its ass now.

No, not a chance. Sure, in an ideal world I'd have unlimited money and I'd be able to upgrade to the fastest CPU's every time they were released, but the real world is nothing like that (for me anyway). I already have a dual-core Opteron system that I'm very happy with, and I feel it'll be a long time before I really feel like I need an upgrade (on the CPU front, anyway). Now, my video card is a different story...I'm still on an AGP 6800GT from 2004, and that's definitely getting kicked to the curb as soon as I can afford an X1900XT or similar. I'd see a much larger performance boost from that video card upgrade than I would from ditching my Opty (and motherboard and RAM) and buying a Conroe.
