Sure, in an ideal world I'd have unlimited money and I'd be able to upgrade to the fastest CPU's every time they were released, but the real world is nothing like that (for me anyway). I already have a dual-core Opteron system that I'm very happy with, and I feel it'll be a long time before I really feel like I need an upgrade (on the CPU front, anyway). Now, my video card is a different story...I'm still on an AGP 6800GT from 2004, and that's definitely getting kicked to the curb as soon as I can afford an X1900XT or similar. I'd see a much larger performance boost from that video card upgrade than I would from ditching my Opty (and motherboard and RAM) and buying a Conroe.

When you get to kicking that 6800GT to the curb, make sure you kick it my way..

Nope I'll be buying an A64, when AM2 and Conroe come out A64s will drop (hopefully) and I'll roll with that

I'll not be intel's beta tester for money.... I'll wait 6-12 months after release...

what i have now is plenty fast.

what i believe i would need to get a step change in performance would be:

3.2GHz quad-core
2nd Generation DX10 videocard
PCI-E 4x X-FI soundcard
PCI-E 4x Ageia PPU

until then i am pretty sure i can hold out as long as I can run games like Oblivion at 1920x1200 with max detail.

Last I heard PPU's flopped......the DX10 cards will do so much more for you then a PPU....but anyways, I think I will be watching the next benchmarks that come out after the actual release of the Conroe really close. I want to get the 2.66 version if I decide to get one....just depends on how well they truely perform.

Match that with decent ram and a nasty 3dcard wrapped in a P180 case.......I'll be happy

I'm probably not going to upgrade my desktop computers anytime soon. I'd rather have a portable laptop than be confined to a desk. My next laptop may have a core 2 duo in it though!

Not yet...just upgraded, although very likely that my next main system will be Conroe-powered.

I will definitely get a few Conroe builds, prolly around September. My software would use as much computing power as I could get, and it is always CPU limited. I guess I would be among the first quad-core adopters as well )

Not sure which one I am buying though... It should be one of these two:

E6300 1.86GHz 2MB 1066MHz 65W Q3 $209
E6600 2.40GHz 4MB 1066MHz 65W Q3 $309

right now I need a new PSU, bigger LCD, two new DX10 cards, new HDDs...

conroe vs. A64/AM2 in games = identical performance because they're mostly GPU limited anyway. so aside from world-beating SuperPi times, who gives a crap?

imho, this is the perfect time to sit back and see what happens in the next 18months

K8L, or ???

Yea like i need to upgrade just cause a mrginaly faster cpu is out

Not changing anything, i like my current system, and then i never jump on the first tech. If past is any indication, new tech is never as reliable as tested and current one. And any ways i will get a new gfx card (DX10) before anything else.

Whats with all the hype, its like this conroe is gonna be next best thing to sliced bread, its pretty much faster than X2 by the same amount that X2 is faster than presler, (at same ratings)

To me, the hype is you'll be able to get a affordable and cheap cpu, according to current msrp, that decimates a more expensive x2 in almost every category. The X2 is a great cpu but it's not cheap and not affordable for many people. The cheapest x2 3800+ is almost twice the price of a 1.86ghz Conroe but the Conroe is expected to perform at the same level or better. That's a very good reason for hype. Sliced bread is good and affordable, Conroe will be good and affordable!!!

what about efficiency

It's been 3 years for my Sytem, & it's still going fine, i m waiting to upgrade once vista arives & Core 2 Duo 2 GHz looks good & efficient, i mean, from the benchmarks, i assume that it will give similar performance to a Athlon64 3800+ X2, & at low prices

Alright, who bumped this old thread?

My heart says do it.

My head says wait until the price drops a tad because my current system is adequate for what I do.

Experience says, if this is a 2-3 upgrade like my current 3.2p4, the sooner the better because dumping old parts will be easier.

I am looking forward to Conroe?s launch. However, I will not be putting out for a new mobo/RAM/CPU all at once. I am more interested in the price drops that AMD will be forced into. I would like to upgrade to a nice X2 from my 939 +3000.

I only upgrade when I find my current system having problems doing somthing I want to do, so I won't be upgrading my Opteron 170 @ 2.4ghz just because somthing faster is available now, any more then I replaced my AXP @ 2.4 ghz when A64's came out, or my Pentium 3 850mhz because of the 1.2ghz T-birds.

Also when I upgrade next, it'll be based ONLY on performance & price (in that order) ... I couldn't care less what company makes my hardware.
