I see absolutely no reason to throw out my AMD Opty 170 rig for at least another year.

Its plenty fast fast for what I need, and I just can't justify having to buy a whole new rig for a few fps more with Codsroe.

I'll see what the market has to offer this time next year, and then decide who gets my cash.

Well, just speculation on my part. But AMD is stating in roadmaps (in AT article) that they will be ready for DDR3 by mid 2008. They just switched to DDR2. Intel has been running DDR2 for 2-3 years now? So Intel controls the memory choice and AMD has to react after the fact. Also Intel can switch fast as all they have to do is to puke out a new chipset, which they do pretty regularly. Combine that with Geil showing off some DDR3 samples at Computex this coming week and the fact Intel setups will react better to DDR3 than AMD systems and you can bet Intel will start to push for DDR3 fairly soon. My guess is we will start to hear rumblings about it in 4-5 months and Intel to begin using it in late January 2007. (After everyone bought Conroe with DDR2 for Christmas).

Mid August I'm hoppping to be running a dual core rig.

It will depend on 2 things:

1) The availablility/price of barebone SFF systems. (for Conroe or AM2 X2)
2) Price/Performance of the AM2 X2 line at the time.

Also hoping there's more info on NVidia's SLI Physics assistance at that time... could be the one thing that gets me to go back to a larger form factor machine.

Considering I'm about to get an opteron 165 and I have no need for that much power, no I won't be kicking my system to the curb.

Yep I'm kicking it to the curb. Although technically it's not quite like I'm going back to Intel from AMD exactly...

I'm running a 2.4Ghz Northwood right now, although I also own an Athlon 64 3400+ system (S754). But the A64 is being used by my family and isn't really as nice a PC in other ways (pretty much only the CPU is any better).

And my 2.4Ghz Northwood is basically on its last legs due to some really messed up capacitors on the mobo amongst other things. It's only still running because I did a hacked up soldering job (without a solder pump/vacuum mind you) where I replaced a few capacitors.

But I think once Core2 is here...my old 2.4Ghz northwood will finally get to retire.
And I'll finally have a good PC again haha...

Although I'm also thinking about resurrecting my old Athlon XP system...LIVE AGAIN!!!

I will most certainly not get rid of my current system. Gonna sell my other PC: AMD64 @ 2.7, 7900GT, 1GB Corsair ram. Hoping to spend about 550 on my conroe machine.

Nah. My 3.4GHz Northwood and Shuttle XPC SB61G2R will sit along side with my E6600 and Shuttle XPC SD37P2.

no i'll hang onto my pentium d 930.I'll get rid of gigabyte 945p and get an ASUS P5W DH which supports conroe and is based of intel 975x chipset.
Maybe i'll upgrade next year, when conroe will go down in price.
