anyone want some kimchee

seriously though, i prefer the sound of korean and japanese. for some reason mandarin sounds harsh to me (harsher tones). chinglish is hilarious to hear though, you can understand 1/4 of the conversation.

I barely speak mandrin. I only can read and right simple characters... I should have stuck with Chinese school when I was in elementary school, but I am was too lazy. My spoken mandrin is okay. It's affected by an accent from my hometown, so it's not perfect mandrin. Give a week or two in China and I'll get caught up with the speaking. As for the reading and the writing... Thank goodness for my parents...

I'm a blonde-haired blue-eyed fair-skinned burn-in-the-shade white boy who speaks Mandarin. Learned it in the Army 13 years ago, while spending a year in beautiful Monterey, California at the Defense Language Institute. Learned from native speakers, some from Dalu, some from Taiwan. All day, every day, nothing but Chinese.

My parents picked me up when I 'graduated' from DLI to take me to my next duty station (in the middle-of-nowhere, San Angelo, TX). So, anyway, the first night travelling, we stop at a little hotel in San Bernadino, which was owned by some Chinese people. Well, there were a ton of things wrong with the room, so my dad and I went to speak to the manager. The elderly manager didn't understand English well, so I started explaining in Chinese, much to this guy's surprise. When I finished, he turned to my dad and said, "He speak better Chinese than I speak English. No accent." Man! Completely made my day, impressing my dad like that, especially so soon after taking the Chinese course.
