Yea, I am holding out for the ASUS A7N-266 w/ the Nforce Chip, 5.1 sound, and LAN.....right up my alley.

Then again there is that TYAN "IDE" Dual thunder K7 coming up....but it's TYAN.

Wow, you folks have really responded to this thread question. Thanks so much for your input.

Now that you've given your opinion on the basic DDR motherboard, I wonder if you would like to build the rest of the system????

Here's what I already have **tentatively** decided on thus far:
--- EPoX EP-8K7A
--- Athlon 1.4
--- Matrox G450 Dual-head graphics card (superb for business and general graphics)
--- Creative Sound Blaster Live Value Edition (one sounds terrific on my present system)
--- 512 Megs of Crucial memory
--- ATA 100 drive --- IBM Deskstar 60GXP or Western Digital WD800BB
--- Hitachi SuperScan 812 21" monitor, running at 1600 x 1200 res, at 85 Hz
--- Windows XP beta

What I yet have to decide upon (?????):
--- Case and power supply
--- CPU Cooling fan
--- CD-RW drive
--- DVD drive
--- etc.

Incidentally, I think I may have the local computer shop put this together for me. They charge $75. I think I'll have greater peace of mind if they do it.

Well, care to advise on those remaining components I've yet to decide upon? Or, any of the components you feel may work better in the category that I've tentatively decided upon?

Looking forward to reading your responses.

Thanks,
Nicholas

Epox!!! 19 votes so far and many more to come... It's surprising how popular it is and the price is not bad either.

What about the ASUS A7A, it is based on the Ali Magik chipset and is stable as hell and has multipliers

ok i'm sold on the epox since several people are praising it.

nkormanik, any particular reason why you chose the Hitachi SuperScan 812 21" monitor? I'm looking at monitors so that's why i'm asking.

"Why Hitachi SuperScan 812 21" monitor?"

I have it already. Nice clear bright screen. I tried a triniton tube different monitor, but couldn't ever get used to those shadow lines across my screen. Been happy with the Hitachi.

I have the MSI K7 Master. I really like it. However, it has onboard audio/gameport, etc. You would think disabling that in BIOS would be enough. So when I booted up Windows for the first time, it detected them anyway, insisting on installing the drivers and causing conflicts. Sure all I had to do was disable them in the control panel --> system folder, but it's still irratating. That and it detected an "unknown device," and it has stayed that way in the systems folder. What... the... hell.

I bought this Epox board for one of my clients and I happened to put in a Netgear card as mentioned earlier and I experienced the same restart/startup problems. The problem was fixed when I removed the card. I am going to see if I can get some info from Netgear on it before attempting to return it. Otherwise the board has been great. Very stable and easy to setup. If yo do go with the Epox, avoid the Netgear NIC network card.
