<< Guess I'm a fan of the classics:

Tora! Tora! Tora!
Kelly's Heroes
Full Metal Jacket
Cross of Iron (not well-known but incredible East Front battle scenes for its time...had real T-34 tanks!)
Dr. Strangelove (Hmmm...can it count as a WAR movie though?)
The Big Red One
Das Boot
Patton

Oh...and I'll add some TV shows I LOVED as a kid:
Combat! (caught it in re-runs)
Rat Patrol (the A-Team of its day )
Hogan's Heroes
>>

It's about time someone said Das Boot!

Twelve O'Clock High (Gregory Peck & Dean Jagger)
M*A*S*H for all of the comedy it is still a great movie.

Where's Battle of The Bulge? It is easily one of the best war films ever. I can't really take part in your poll because I can't make a choice. A lot of those movies are so good that chosing one over the other is difficult.

As far as a real war movie goes it might be between The Longest Day, The Battle of the Bulge, and A Bridge Too Far. But then again there is Saving Private Ryan, Kelly's Heroes, and Patton. I give up. They are all great movies!

My personal favorite is Schindler's List - I saw it in 11th grade, had to get a release from my parents, hahha... It just made all these really intense emotions well up... very very intense film, regardless of battle scenes, the message of the movie was very powerful... IMO, gore or action scenes do not make a movie.

Schindler's List is definitely awesome. No doubt about that.

There are some pretty varied picks here. No one's mentioned Casablanca. Great movie. Not a fighting movie, but still a war piece.

TV-wise, no one's pulled up Baa Baa Black Sheep. Or was it Black Sheep Squadron? Good grief, it's been so long I can't remember. I think it was Black Sheep Squadron. Good stuf along w/ Hogan's Heroes At work, when asked something I don't know, I answer, "I plead the Schultz defense. 'I knowww NUTHINK!!!'"

Did anyone mention Bridge over the River Kwai?

I agree with whoever said Bridge on the River Kwai. There's some deep stuff in there.

Also, if you can call Spartacus a war movie, then I'd also like to vote for Magnificent Seven. I promise, I've seen that thing 10 times and I never get tired of it.

You should add Dr. Zhivago to complete the David Lean Triumvarate (including Lawrance of Arabia and Bridge Over The River Kwai).

I have to go with Apoclypse Now. As far a telling a good story about how war is, it is on the top of my list.
Some of the "war movies" people have mentioned kind of make me wonder though. I won't list any so as not to cause a ruckus.
But if you want to list a movie because it was set in a war period, not because it was a movie about a war, cut and dry the best movie would be Gone With the Wind. imho

So many good movies... so hard to vote.

My favorites in no particular order.

Bridge on the River Kwai
Zulu
Patton
Saving Private Ryan
The Great Escape
Brave Heart

And how can I forget "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! " Sure its a comedy, but its hilarious!

I think The Thin Red Line is missing because it was incredibly boring.

Got a good one though that nobody seemed to mention.

Glory (sometimes we forget about the civil war)

The Thin Red Line is an Artsy Fartsy flick that just happened to have a big budget and some big stars. Interspersing poetry reading and dream sequences with hand to hand combat takes you out of contention...

Lawrence of Arabia isn't a "war" movie in the sense of Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, or SPR, but its's clearly the best movie listed there. Bridge on the River Kwai is second. David Lean was brilliant.

For Vietnam I have to go with Full Metal Jacket.
For WWII my favorites in no particular order are:
In Harms Way
The Great Escape
Mr Roberts
The Caine Mutiny
Tora Tora Tora
For WWI I loved The Blue Max. The aerial photography is gorgeous and I was lucky enough as a kid to see it in the theatre on a huge screen.
