I would definetely add M*A*S*H to the list. I realize that it is not a typical combat war movie, but it was a classic and a truly great movie.

Chalk up another for Das Boot, although it's not really easy to pick just one or two films since there are so many good ones. I also love Tora Tora Tora, the Longest Day and Patton. But then again I have a WWII bias since that was my major area of study as an undergrad. I even took a class on WWII in film and literature one semester (watching movies for credit . . . woohoo! almost as good as my class on sci-fi films.) There are so many interesting possibilities and angles to take here. Perhaps this would be better suited by best WWII film, best Vietnam film, etc. Granted, those are by far the two biggest areas.

Hard to pick a favorite, I liked at least a half dozen mentioned or on the list very much. Ended up choosing Das Boot because that is the movie the most about war that is the most authentic. Maybe would have chosen Enola Gay for similar reasons. I hate it when they have old actors (like 50 year old John Wayne) in war movies-the fodder for war is young men, 18-20.

Russ, I can't believe you suggested The Green Beret-the part of it that I could sit through was one long propoganda screed. And John Wayne? He was old enough to need a handicap parking permit by the time of that movie.

The Thin Red Line was an excellent book, highly reccomended. Never saw the movie-see my comments above about old actors in war movies.

The only thing is that most of those movies the people here have never seen.

Although Lawrence of Arabia is more drama than true 'war movie', it is the best on the list by far, IMHO.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Where Eagles Dare, with Eastwood and Richard Burton. Easily one of the coolest WW2 movies I've ever seen.

You can really tell the average age in here judging by all the votes for SPR and FMJ.

C'mon kids, go to the video store and rent some of these old ones... they're far better than FMJ.

If you haven't seen Zulu, I highly recommend it.

In the history of the Victoria Cross (Britains highest military medal), there is a disproportionate number awarded for the Battle of Rourke's Drift. This movie is about this battle.

Makes me proud to be English

Zulu was a great flick! Glory was excellent. WW2 movies have always been a favorite of mine - Longest Day, Bridge too Far, Bridge at Remagen, Patton, Battle of the Bulge, Stalingrad and Das Boot are all great. The only thing that irks me about most of those movies is the "dressing up" of allied war equipment to double as German. It is rare to see actual German equipment in movies...although Saving Private Ryan did a pretty good job...and except for the boring middle 1.5 hours it too was a good war movie.

I saw Tigerland last week and thought it was a great movie. It's in the New Releases section of your local video place.

Some reviewer called it the best movie of the year and it is proudly displayed on the box. I am not sure it was the best movie of the year, but it was certainly an excellent movie.
