If they attack on land alone maybe, but Britain can certainly destroy every inch of the country. Britain will certainly win in an attack situation. Occupation is an entirely different matter.

Well, Britain is smart, and I doubt they'll try to occupy the country. Shelling from sea and destroying infrastructure would possibly bring Iran to its knees, and if not, there would be minimal risk to UK lives

OMG, you're right, its all a trick. Britain is just provoking Iran by sending their sailors into Iranian waters, and now they are cunningly trying to diplomatically negotiate for their release.

Wait, when does the bombing start?

Let's face it, NOBODY really knows where the sailors were. Either claim could be true. The problem is the way Iran has handled it. In the vast majority of countries they would have been warned off. Instead Iran has taken them hostage.

If a North Korean vessel was in US waters off the coast of Alaska, would we a) warn them off or b) detain them, find out what they were doing, and release/charge them?

Last time Britain pwned Argentina. If a war does break out as a result of the kidnapping of British soldiers, who would win in a confrontation, assuming no other parties get involved?

Britain won the war, but I wouldn't say they owned them. There is videos out there showing Argentinian aircraft flying around the British fleet at free will. If it was an American fleet those Argentinian aircraft would of been spotted by long range search radar or AWACS 100 miles away. Argentina also sunk a few British ships. Hardly ownage for Britain having suffered such losses and embarassment.

Yeah, seriously. Didn't Argentina sink one of their carriers? Britain has the better military, for sure, but they can't really do anything to Iran with it.

They can't? Iran's economy based on selling oil. Destroy their refinery, destroy their pipeline and Iran ceases to exist on the world stage. They're right back in the stone age where they belong. There's probably not a single "military power" on earth that can be brought to their knees more easily than Iran. One wave of air attacks and their economy would be gone.

Stone age where they belong? Excuse me? Just how racist and stupid are you?

Now maybe Gag would be kind enough to enlighten us on why Persians all of the sudden belong in the stone ages.

Unless we had good reason to think that they were up to something fishy, we would warn them off. From what some friends in the CG have said this is actually VERY common.

Oh, and to note, they were (supposedly) only a couple hundred yards on the other side, it is not as if they were deep inside.

Edit: And let's face it, the British were not up to anything. If they were inside their waters it was accidental.

Their air force is mostly grounded for lack of spare parts, the tanks are all 60's and 70's era Russian junk and their navy is a couple of relic subs paired with light coastal defense boats. All they have that works is a large helicopter fleet.

Funny, I bet American's thought the same thing about Iraq. We sure won that one. Stay the course.

Actually, we obliterated the Iraqi army. But maybe you just weren't paying attention.

Billions of dollars and years of labor to rebuild, 10 seconds to re-destroy. Bombs are cheap and England has plenty of them.
Years over schedule and billions of dollars over budget...maybe if you put Halliburton in charge of it. Iran doesn't have an insurgency problem either.

I didn't realize that Britain could only bomb a place once.

March 23rd: 15 sailors detained.
March 24th: No bombs dropped.
March 25th: No bombs dropped.
March 26th: No bombs dropped.
March 27th: No bombs dropped.
March 28th: No bombs dropped.
March 29th: No bombs dropped.
March 30th: No bombs dropped.
March 31st: No bombs dropped.

I'm beginning to see a pattern here.

Wow, you mean they aren't going go all cowboy, running into things with no plan.

Could they invade and occupy Iran? No. But they easily have enough air and naval power to do major damage to Iran's military and infrastructure.

As Jon Stewart said recently on The Daily Show, the US might not be so good right now at nation building, but we're still first-class nation destroyers. The US military could rip out Iranian military and civilian infrastructure within days. The British could likely do the same.

The Iraqi army didn't present much of a challenge for the US military, whereas the occupation does present a challenge, especially given that the people in charge of it (Rumsfeld, et al) have proven themselves to be spectacularly incompetent.
