Poll: Cable or DSL?

I prefer DSL because I play games, I need the IP's, and I need control of reverse DNS. If, by stability, you mean "solid ping times," then go with DSL. Just be sure that your point of presence (POP) is nearby. After about 4 months, my ISP (Speakeasy) opened a new POP that was across the bay, which reduced the latency to my gateway from ~90 ms to ~11 ms. I'm also happy with my DL speed of 150Kb/s any time of day, but from what I hear, cable can peak far beyond that.

[edit] You should consider cost as well. In my area, "decent" DSL (like what I have) runs about $100 / mo, whereas cable runs about $40 / mo. It all depends on what you plan to do.

christ!, it's exspensive!! i'm in denmark, i would have to pay 260 dKr. for cable, (with a dynamic ip translation) wich meen i have the same ip all the time... that would be like 25 $ a month, for a 4GB traffic limit... at work i have dsl, running good, but my friends cable seems faster, but jumps off from time to time... i don't know...

I like my cable at $40 a month. My friend has DSL for $45 a month and it is much slower than mine. On speed tests I get between 700 and 800 down and 200 up.

depends on who services your line and who your ISP is. here in the bay area we've got pacbell dsl vs. att cable, and cable rocks by far. all my friends have cable and hit lines 2-3, sometimes 4 times faster then my DSL. pacbell's not incredibly reliable (although much more so this year, last year they were horrid), and runs PPPoE which is suck. cable's gone out about as much as pacbell has, so that leads me to let go of the DSL is more stable judgement. although cable times do vary from the day to night, even their worst day times are equivalent to my dsl, and at night they're untouchable. i can't ever get higher then 1.2mbps, but that's around what i average at (along with another friend who uses pacbell). we both couldn't get att, so we were stuck. we also both use a router to get around the hassle of PPPoE.

Cable. DSL is limited by geographical chance and the phone company where I live (Ameritech) doesn't seem to be interested in being a big player in the Broadband market.

I just got DSL from Earthlink.

1299k down and 329k up.

But some servers are just plain slow to take advantage of actual speed you have.

CNET for instance I can only get 300k down.

Microsoft I can download at full speed.

Cable all the way! i've had cable for almost a year now, and i have yet to experience an interruption of service, or a slowdown. i went from order to live in under a week. here in nyc, we have time warner cable, using roadrunner for the isp. couldnt be happier.

cable peaks are great, much better than what i'd have to pay for dsl. but heres it's mightly flaw, can't game I get connection interupts in quake all the time I mean, pings are ok, under 100 during the day, but spike up to 300+ at night.. when I DO wanna game Of course, @home doesn't support gaming.... and I think it's more comcast as fault here and crappy hardware. My cable tends to drop my speed to zero for 5-10 seconds then kick back in... i have no idea.. and the techs don't either (they say call when it happens.. it only happens for 5-10 seconds!! by the time i get thru their menus to get in touch, it all checks out as good :|

I have DSL and am very happy with it. Although my ISP(TXU Communications) guarantees 328 down and 128 up I usually get 1.3 megs down and 260 or more up. It costs me $39.95 a month. I could never go back to dialup ever again no matter what the cost.

I have DSL because the cable company in my town said "there's no future in cable internet access" So I told them to crank up their model T and sell some more video. Most of the prople I talk to are happier with cable. I bumped myself to 768 SDSL.

90 percent depends on the area you live and 10 percent depends on the exact location. Try to find some usenet forums for the cable and DSL and ask what is typical around there.

Don't forget equipment costs too. Somethymes they will be included.

Our DSL here is capped really low, at 96KB/sec here and its $40/month. Our Insight@Home cable is $30/month and has never gone down. My upload it uncapped--I get 115KB/sec sometimes--on average 100 to my friends in town. My download is capped around 400 I believe, because I've never gone past that. They only monitor your upload, not your download here. I say cable is better--at least here.

I'd tryout cable first. Most DSL have their upload capped at 128k, so you can expect upload rates of around 15kb/s. I always download faster from guys on cable than on dsl. Who cares about upload when download is more important you may ask? Well its been my experience the more you give the more you get.

I have 1.5M ADSL and looooove it. Its cheaper than cable and more reliable (at least here). The cable guys here can shove it. They had no interest in even supplying cable internet until ADSL came along. They have a hard enough time keeping the TV channels on line, let alone keep the network up. Screw 'em. DSL all the way!!
