My family and I go camping a couple times a year actually. We've never gone without tents, but that's mostly because we go camping in areas where -- either by virtue of local wildlife/bugs or the local weather -- protection from the elements is key. Beyond that we pretty much rough it, though because of Mom's bad knee we can no longer go backpacking. We all pile in the van and go poking around, seeing what we can find. We do bring a propane stove with us, and I usually have my laptop in the van just because often there's nothing to do in the 5 hours it takes to get from where we are to where we want to camp, but there's still a good deal of "roughing it" involved.
Backpacking is fun too, provided I've had enough time to get my feet in shape. (They're small and get sore unless I do a couple months of exercises beforehand) Sure, no warm food, but the best views are at least a few miles from the nearest road.
FYI, I used to live in the San Jose Bay Area. (Fremont specifically) Now I live in the Carson City/Reno Nevada area.
