To: U.S Congress
I believe that all movie theatres in United States should have closed caption for us that are hard of hearing and deaf, so that we may enjoy movies too like everyone else who can hear well.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

A law forcing theaters to have closed captioning?

That would be really, really crappy..IMO, anyways. It messes up dialogue timing, and it's annoying to have up on screen as well. Maybe select showings...but all of them!? :disgust:

Anyways, what do you think?

Ack! If i want to see a subtitled film, i'll download a ripped chinese version of a currently-playing title now. Otherwise, i'll see a real foreign film if i want subs. That really sucks.

Well im gonna make a petition calling for the ban of all movies, because blind people cant see them and therefore its discriminatory.

What a bunch of selfish fsk's, I mean God Forbid that people who go thru life unable to hear normally might actually be able to attend the opening of a movie that plays better on the big screen and enjoy it ! I mean, hell those inconsiderate deaf people, how dare they screw up timing and dialogue for pimple farmer dweebs !!

The world is a big place,it's not all about you !

I voted YES because they also need to have wide lush chairs that can support overweight people.

Baffled, perhaps you need to reread my original post:

Maybe select showings...but all of them!?

I have nothing against closed captioning for select showings...but do I want it REQUIRED for EVERY SINGLE THEATER?? In short, no.

i dont go to the movies so i dont give a fvck really, but if i did, i wouldnt want damn subtitles on the fvcking screen unless it was a foreign film. (ie crouching tiger)

required? hell no.

maybe a special screening of said movie w/ CC, but not on every damn screen at every damn showing.

They should also play the ending of the movie first so people with short attention spans can enjoy the movie like everyone else

Inconvenience the majority so the minority can be satisfied?

i dont think so. that isnt fair to someone who can hear, text on the screen IS distracting. I hate it when my sister turns on CC on the TV, and she can hear. it's just annoying.

select screenings would be fine. not all of them though.

So you are the majority? Right.

Would it be fair if they had select theatres with no subtitles?

I agree with baff. surprise surprise.
The petition doesn't say anything about making ALL showings closed captioned. I think they should at least have SOME though. It is currently very difficult to find a movie theater that shows closed captioned movies, and the movies they show are typically so old that they're available on video.

i would tend to think there are more hearing capable people in the country than not. if i am mistaken, then i withdraw that statement.

i have no problem w/ every theatre having showings w/ subtitles. just not EVERY screening.

I wish we could legislate a ban on deafness, unfortunately we can't, but maybe we could require special movie showings for the clueless

so, your stance on this is what?

do you want every screening of a movie to have closed captions?

or are you just playing devils advocate here?

Let's say out of 100 people 10 are deaf...so 10% would benefit from CC, and 90% wouldn't.

Out of 100 theaters, you want all 100 to be required by law to have closed captioning? I'm not saying that CC is *bad*..I'm saying that it should not be required by law.

If you think the majority of the population is deaf, so be it...but I disagree.

Would it be fair if they had select theatres with no subtitles?
No. Again, majority != deaf. If the majority was deaf, then maybe...but I still feel that it is not the responsibility of the United States Government to regulate movie theaters' closed captioning policies.

Exactly !!! I mean god forbid that deaf, seriously hearing impaired people might be able to enjoy a film on the big screen when it's first released, I mean that might cause people with normal hearing a bit of an inconvience, heck we can't have that now can we?

Again, I think that's the reponsibility of the individual theater. It's not the government's business..then again, I'm not as liberal as some

Don't get me wrong - it's great if a theater wants to run a CC film for hearing impaired people, but don't make the majority sit through a CC film just for a few deaf people. I have nothing against deaf people..but if I pay $5-7 for a movie ticket, I do not want CC. If a theater wants to run all their films with CC, so be it..but I won't go there.

I may have misinterpreted the petition - if a law was created on this matter, that petition would need some serious revision.

i dont think anyone is arguing against it... just not in every screening of a movie.

someone with a hearing impairment should be able to go see a movie w/ CC, just as everyone else should be able to go and see a movie w/o it. i'm not sure who you're trying to convince, but it seems you're preachin to the choir so to speak, just a bit combatively.

The problem is, where does it stop? What if some blind people wanted a "play-by-play" announcment of the show? What if people who were afraid of the dark wanted the lights to be on? What if calustrophobic people wanted the seats 5 ft apart?

This could open a flood gate if it's *required*. We don't need more requirements for things. If it's optional, then have at it.

What about 1 screening room where they have sub-titled films?
