Do you prefer private bathrooms inside your room or public bathrooms in college? Why?

Why on Earth would anyone prefer public bathrooms?

In addition to dealing with the fact that half the kids in my dorm apparently grew up without mommies and daddies to show them how the flush worked, the bathrooms weren't cleaned over the weekends... so if someone got plastered and emptied their stomach into a stall, it didn't get cleaned for up to 3 days. Some bathrooms were actually closed for a few days due to being health hazards.

definitely private.

all the dorms I lived in at college had public bathrooms/showers, though. it wasn't the end of the world, though having to wear flip-flops was a bit annoying.

Well, some people have said:
1. You don't have to worry about keeping your own bathroom clean and the public bathrooms are cleaned daily.
2. A dorm room with a private bath has less space in it due to the bathroom than a dorm with public bathrooms in it.
3. Rooms with private baths generally cost more. (I'm not really concerned about the cost though)
4. Dorms with private baths tend to create a very anti-social environment-- you get the opportunity to meet new people in dorms with public baths.

The main issue with me however-- are these worth the loss in privacy? I don't really know what a public bath is like really in respect to how much privacy there is...I'm assuming people don't just walk around naked everywhere. Could anyone enlighten me a bit?

By the way, I'm going to be going to UT Austin.

I liked the unisex public bath, the kind you see in Starship Troopers.

1) Well, if VT is any indication of the majority (and I'm pretty sure it is), then no, they're not cleaned daily, and even if they were it wouldn't be enough. All it takes is one moron with bad aim to make the bathroom reek the rest of the day.

2) Yes, because you're sharing that "extra space" with other people in your communal showers. Exactly how much space do you need in a bathroom anyway?

3) Its worth it.

4) So you were planning on discussing politics with the guy next to you while you're taking a sh!t? Honestly, the people in your bathroom are in your hall anyway, you'll meet them and talk to them daily regardless.

Private bathrooms this year...public bathrooms in my suite next year.

Bentley cleans the bathrooms every day, so they are always relatively clean, but I am still looking forward to having my own bathroom next year.

My roommate and I had an 8x16 room that served as my bedroom, living room, closet and kitchen... I'd rather not give up even 30 of my 128 sq ft for a bathroom. We had public bathrooms with communal showers (no stalls), and it really wasn't anything terrible... Never got athlete's foot or anything like that.

Edit: I agree with pretty much everything blueshoe said. At my school only one dorm had private bathrooms, and it had a reputation for being an anti-social place to live.

I was reffering to the size of the actual dorm room, not the bathroom. Because the bathroom takes up space, the actual size of the room where you live would be a little smaller.

heh, well that's not really a selling point for me on public baths, I don't recall meeting any best friends during the course of taking a sh!t

well if you want privacy, hopefully you'll have shower stalls with curtains and toilet stalls with doors. If the dorm was built after the Stone Age the chances are better. I don't know anything specific about UT.

And I really don't recommend taking a shower without flip flops. There's a very real risk of getting plantar warts.

I like public bathrooms because:

1) They are about $2500-$3000 cheaper at my dorm
2) I am too lazy to clean my bathroom.
3) The double room without bathrooms are huge compared to the ones with bathrooms.

Down sides:

1) I have an unknown guy on our floor that our floor guys call atomic butt and he strikes about every 3 weeks. And its not me.

they're worth it just for the fact that you won't have to walk back and forth between the public bathroom and your dorm room carrying all of your shower stuff with you.

also, no need to worry about locking yourself out it happened to me once sophomore year. I had to ride downstairs in an elevator, walk through the lobby, and wait for the building manager to come and give me a spare key, all the while soaking wet and wearing only a towel. heh.

Public! In our wing, we have, for 10 guys: 2 stalls, 3 showers, and 3 sinks. Our bathroom is the cleanest in the dorm, and yup, it's cleaned everyday except Sunday!

Take it from me after living in Jester @ UT Austin ... go Private bath. San Jac dorms are all private bath I believe.

Also, I don't believe the dorms are any bigger for public than having a suite (bathroom between 2 rooms). Private bathroom in Jester is rare, but like I said above, San Jac is all private (about 90% sure about that).

Why in the world would anyone prefer public?

I'll be making a tradeoff, though- 13 foot ceilings with lofts permitted with public bath. I say it's worth nearly doubling your space in an already-large room.

GO HORNS!

I'm a first year at UT Austin right now, and I have public bathrooms at Andrews (part of the Quad).

Personally I like it. My reason for choosing public bathrooms over connceting restroom suite:

-price (a dollar saved is a dollar earned)
-don't have to clean it yourself
-don't have to clean it yourself
-don't have to clean it yourself

The restroom does get pretty nasty over the weekend if someone decides to get to know the toilet bowl a little bit better, but during the week it is cleaned daily. If one's messed up there are usually other restrooms that you could use on your floor.

I think in Jester, the bath and the toilets are separate, so even if the restrooms are nasty, you can still take a shower. (Don't quote me on this though, cus I only lived in Jester for a couple of days during orientation.)

Imagine sharing a suite (usually 2 rooms, 4 people), and one of your neighbor decides to puke all over the place, yall'll have the fun of cleaning it up amonst yourselves.

Of course you could also get a true private bath for your room, but those are quite pricey.

All the rooms at San Jacinto are private baths. The rooms are extremely nice (compared to some of the older dorms, hey are a little more spacious (at least it feels like it), much better lit, and it just feels....clean.

However, I have heard compalints from people that live in San Jac that it's a very dead community. It's not a very social climate since you can do everything inside your room. Some of my friends can't wait to get out of San Jac. Also it just feels too....hotel-ly if you know what i mean. It doesn't feel homey.

Privacy isn't that big of an issue for me. Every shower has their own little 'stall' so to speak. And if it's still a big deal, then just take your shower at a odd time (mid morning or afternoon)

You aren't gonna see naked people running around (hopefully). Most people wear a bathrobe or towel. There are some people that walks around in boxers, but that's no big deal for me. Most (not all) of the floor are single sex anyways.

Ask away in PM if you have any questions!

Hook'em! JEFF

That's really gross. Out public bathrooms are always kept super clean. Also, we have the normal cleaning service on the weekend so i suppose that helps. Also, the fact that we are females may help too...
