I have been wondering how do most people shop when it comes to computers. I've found that some of the best prices to be had are from small local computer stores. I'm talking about your local ma and pa corner comp shop not a local chain. Usually the best deals in town are from these guys. The only down side to these stores is that 99% of the time you are getting an OEM part unless you specifically ask for retail and the warrenty is usually something like 30 days. However as I build my own systems now this works out good for me, once a part is up and running for a few days you probably won't need anything in the way of warenty anyway, just remember to stress test your comp in the first few weeks. The first time I walked out of one of these stores holding a hard drive/cpu or ram stick in a little antistatic bag I was a bit warry but I've had very few problems. One of the big advantages is that you know exactly where the store is, no need to deal with annoying online support systems and long distance calls.

online all the way. newegg has really been one of the best all round places recently. a few years ago cmpexpress kickedass, but they were bought out by outpost.com when the internet boom came. mwave has also been a favorite. cant beat the grey market . ma and pa computer stores around here are sky high. still selling things like isa sound cards for 50$ and tnt2 cards for 100$.

I buy my computer parts almost exclusively online. The only exception really is monitors. I don't want to pay the shipping price of a monitor, and I get the best buy warranty so I don't have to worry about beating the crap out of it.

I can't stand online shops cuz I have to wait.
know your ma/pa shops and you'll find some NICE prices.

I usually get retail boxes now because there are many occasions where OEM parts don't give you everything you need in the package.
like OEM videocards sometimes don't have the s-video cable for tv-out, or RCA cable or whatnot. Sometimes, you actually get a better value with retail. especially if there are rebates floating around.

If its something that I gotta have right NOW, then I check out the local stores. Otherwise, Newegg is my first stop.

Newegg!! Maybe a couple other stores because of the HotDeals forums. Other then that, a store like Frys, Best Buy, or Comp USA if I need it today.

online, depend where you buy if you can find a good one usually much cheaper then local store, they have a much overheads so they jacked their prices all the way up to make you the customer pay for it. local store also don't carry everything that you can find online, they only carry what they think that is in high demand but you as a minority will be left out in the dust or have to settle for not what you want say you want Seagate but they carry only WD. They don't sell for less because in order to maximize their profit it must be sold for 1000% for what it's worth. Small computer shop maybe a little cheaper then retail store like Best Buy or CompUSA but it is still far from being cheap.

The best mom and pop shops can usually only match the best online prices, not beat them. But then you have to pay tax. So I usually order online. Better prices, saves me a trip, and no tax. Tax is the killer.

That's why I rarely ever shop at newegg.com. They're in CA. Tax. If I was willing to pay tax, I'd use a local shop.

Instead, I usually buy from directron.com.

As far as Taxes go I live in Canada so no mater where I buy online or not I'm looking at 14%.
