Does DDR Ram really live up to its hype? It may be cheaper than Rambus, but which is a better performer? Only Facts Please!!

I think you should check your poll....

But to answer the question...not really right now. The KT133A seems to give nearly as much performance increase by moving to 266Mhz FSB with SDRAM as the AMD760 does with 266Mhz FSB with DDR does...

I'd be going KT133A with SDRAM if I was looking for a new sytem...
my TBird 864 on AMD750 will have to hold me a bit longer though.

It seems everytime a new kind of memory come out, people throw away logic and hype it, then when it doesnt live up to the hype they're disapointed. SDRAM was the same, RDRAM was the same. Is DDR magic that makes everything twice as fast? No. Is DDR worth upgrading to from SDRAM right now? No. Will it be essential eventually? Yes.

ddr isnt the end to all means. its a step in the right direction though. if we can increase mobo front bus speeds to 200+ mhz, why be limited by memory that can only run at 100-150 mhz? ddr will eventually be outdone by something better, but in the meantime it pushes the technology forward and increases competition.

OK... Here's the strait dope: DDR SDRAM kicks much booty, the problem is there isn't enough booty around to be kicked! Read some hardware reviews involving DDR mobo's and you'll notice that memory bandwidth is rarely a criticle issue, unless you normally run 25 programs at the same time! Quake3 and benchmarking programs are the about the only memory intensive programs out there. It is true that it offers twice the memory bandwidth, though. At this stage of the game a DDR FSB is still more important than a DDR RAM bus. But together they would make a kickin platform!

DDR gives a decent increase, check out Toms he has a comparision between KT133A, AMD760, and ALi Magik using final Production boards. Anand used a Reference board that didnt perform as well. Either way prices will be coming down given a little bit, and I think that yes it will be worth it given time for the prices to settle.

Hi,

as WildCoyote said: Doing step by step for getting faster!

Not only one thing makes the speed of a system.
10% faster memory, 5% faster harddisk, 15% for the new graphiccard, 20% for the new processor, and you have a new high speed system.

Memory is only one thing, but it is neccessary to get faster RAM!

DDR isn't worth it now but when Athons reach 1.5 ghz and higher, they will need some serious memory bandwith.

Asof now, DDR is only good for video cards which requires a lot of bandwidth but that's a completely different story altogether.

Since I am still using a P2-450, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon. It's more expensive than a Via/SDRAM combo though.

Thunderbird 1.2GHz(266FSB) - $360
Asus A7M266(AMD 760) - $200
256MB Mushkin PC2100 - $400

I'd wait till Crucial releases PC2100 DDR RAM. Mushkin has always been overpriced.

Micron (crucial) has 128 Meg PC1600 8ns going for ~$75, PC2100 will only be a few dollars more.

What I want to know is, where did you get this

<< I know that it is a AMD big selling point in many cases and is claimed to make your system run twice as fast. >>

idea?

I've NEVER heard anyone, most especially not AMD, but not even the most raving ddr lunatic, make this claim. I've only heard this from people asking, "sniff, why doesn't 2x as much memory bandwidth give 2x as much performance?". I think the answer is the same answer to why Rambus didn't rule the world, and it didn't have everything to do with latency (tho that is part of it).

The biggest thing is, that today's apps aren't as voracious for bandwidth as you might think. In a few years, who knows, but otherwise...

HOW did you get 9X133?
My chip is not locked, but I cannot adjust the multiplier
in the bios. Are you doing this in the bios? Jumpers?
Help me please!!! I have PC2100 that is running at 1600, ouch!
Thanks in advance! Justin.
