Yeah I've got the Sandisk CF reader sitting right here, model #SDDR-05. I've used it both on my Win2k desktop machine at home and my i8000 at work with zero problems. I plug it in, the add new hardware wizard comes up, I point it to the drivers I downloaded off the web, and it installs itself without rebooting.

Oh well, at least you got it working. I just hate to see you sacrifice the stability of Win2k for WinME... but as you said, it's not your machine, so...

RVN: You and others do not seem to get it. Let me clue you in. We are not claiming to be "better than thou, my morals are correct". If you have a problem with your laptop, then call Dell and deal with them. You are entitled to that service. What you do is up to you. Just don't post here telling people that they should do it too because they just gave you XXX to keep it and here is how I did it. If you are capable of buying a laptop, you should be capable enough to call them and send it back.

Starting a thread that says "...Get back $300 NOW..." is WRONG. You are implying that you are entitled to $300 from Dell. This stuff should not be posted. Even after the thread was finally locked, Dx-treme still reminds everyone to get their $300 back like it's some rebate they're giving to all of their customers as long as they call within the first 30 days. It's not.

I don't see how you can't see the difference. It is clear and simple. If you have problems with your laptop or don't like it, do the same thing you would do if you bought it at Best Buy. Return it. And if you want, tell people what you didn't like so they can use that useful information if they are considering making the same purchase.

I have arranged the Windows 2000 swap for my original Windows ME. Is the Windows 2000 they ship just an OEM install CD? If so, I'll go ahead and install my own copy of Windows 2000 instead of waiting five days for the Dell copy to arrive.

I requested a return today; one more refurbished unit for Dell to sell. I've got 128MB Crucial Ram available. Email me if you want. I'm dissappointed with Dell's customer service and the build quality of the I8K. No matter what they could offer as an incentive for me to keep it doesn't get rid of the bad taste in my mouth for their customer service and the prospect of having to deal with it for another three years.

For the win2k upgrade. They asked for Windows Me back. How did you get the certificate of authenticity off of the bottom of the notebook? Do we have to return it?

I got these for my win2k swap

1) not 100% properly installed win 2k on theHDD

2) A win2k cd

Thesetwo happened to be different (diff serial numbers) however the serial on the HDD is already entered.

No i did not peel off the win me sticker, before returning it.

No i do not get the free 10 gig HDD, that is just a fluke.

however i did get a free 8X cdrw !

Iilac: I had to peel off my sticker and send it back. I even called because it is a pain. They're getting a whole bunch of little pieces if they ever send me that mailing label. Speaking of that, did everyone who received their OS replacement get their's from Airborne Express in an envelope? If so, how did you send it back? All that was in my envelope was the CD and COA. I've been promised twice now that they'd send me a shipping label to send it back and I've yet to see it. I am not really feeling up to waiting 1 hour on hold for Tech Support, but looks like I'm going to have to just so I can avoid charges to my CC.

Has anyone actually received the rebate yet? I ordered through RadioShack.com in that Passport deal. Ordered 12/20, shipped 12/27, and still no sign of email from Microsoft. No confirmation email from them stating they were processing the rebate....Anyone have success around the same order time?
