The main reason for SSD is speed. Nowhere else do you experience such a bottleneck while accessing data. Boot times are around 10 secs. and executing programs is tons faster. Keep it simple with an SSD boot and platters for storage. I only use a 128Gb Micron I got for $70 and it's plenty fast. The machine is strictly for vidoe editing, so I'll never use more space than I am now. You may be better off with a 240 or larger, but a 128 works if you're vigilante in directing where your programs install and store data. I use a single 3TB WD for storage, and leave a back up image of the SSD on it, as well as on the network. Get an SSD.. They are more reliable now than they've ever been. It's the biggest performance boost you can give your machine.

Effectively -- I currently use a 60GB SSD in an ISRT configuration with my boot-system HDD. It requires the overall BIOS configuration of "RAID-mode."

I am (very carefully) preparing for a migration to a 500GB Samsung 840 Pro, to replace the cache and accelerated HDD.

I just installed another 120GB SSD in my server as the OS boot-system drive.

Obviously, in both the latter cases, this reduces power-consumption.

For "serious" business applications, I won't put data files on my SSD unless the application needs to load large files quickly. In fact, most of my data files are stored and accessed on my server box directly.

For those of you that have a big gpu, and have removable hard drive cages, how do you fit more than 3 hd's in there ? I had to remove the middle section of my hd and cage to fit my 7970. I'd like to put a fourth hd and in there for data, probably another 1tb or another ssd for a hackingtosh install.

The poll isn't that good because awhile I use a SSD for OS and HDD for the data if a SSD was the same price as HDD on GB/£ ratio then I would always go with a SSD!

If you wanted to you can get a 5.25in drive bay converter and stick another HDD in there.

I'll look into that. I may have an extra dvd drive slot I could use. I could stick the middle hd cage back in but it would be a tight fit and I like having the airflow to my card without it.

I wish prices would drop so I could go all ssd. For that I would need a 1tb ssd at least. I would use the other two ssd's for Linux and other installs. Then use the regular 1tb drive for backup and data items.

I have a 240GB SSD, two 1TB HDD and two 3TB HDD. I would definitely love to ditch HDD altogether, but will only do so when the price per GB makes sense. I suspect that may take a few more years.

Very interesting. Indicates you have real faith and trust in SSDs. That's the kinda info I am looking for.

Fascinating! I will never in my life have a system as uber as yours....but, I will never need one.

Again, if say 2T SSDs existed and were affordable, would you do away with mechanical altogether? Would U trust the technology enough to do that?

I dunno....I thought when I came in just before, I would find thousands of people would have voted in this poll....making it an important sampling.

Desktop:
256GB SSD + 2TB HDD

Pictures, documents, ISO files ect on the HDD. Everything else on the SSD.

Laptop:
240GB SSD and 1TB HDD.

Interesting. Can U pls explain why you wouldn't???

I was wondering the same. But then, I thought, they must have custom cases. I assume those must exist. Do they?

I would do away with mechanical if I could. Less heat, noise, vibration and so on. Still would follow the same practice of backups and redundancy because even an SSD that has 0% chance of failing would not make it through theft, lightning strike, hammer or house fire. With the speed, I would even feel better about rebuilding any array which is the issue with large HDD drives.

Thanks for this.

But, an SSD that has zero chance of failing? U think that exists?

I will add....at least I do not live in fear of someone taking a hammer to my machines.()

Someone would have to be VERY PMSed to do that.:sneaky:

All of us that have pc's here have custom cases. I like the nzxt 410 because the space is good enough for me. Other cases did not have removable hd cages and as time passes gpu's will only get bigger.

My main goal is to get a 512ssd and keep Windows on there, then hook the Samsung 256 ssd into another slot, one hd cage can hold two ssd's and somehow still keep the 128gb m4 and the 1tb mechanical drive connected as well. I'll install a hackingtosh on the 256gb ssd, Linux on the 128gb one, and keep games and other files on the mechanical.

K...new, cutting to the bottom line question: what would be the downside as anyone here sees it to putting everything on an SSD for me (using one of my mechanicals for backup), given I can easily fit everything with room to spare on any 250GB drive?

Well! First, no way all of us here.....but I did not know this!!!! It was logical, so I assumed, but I did not know.
Are these bigger than ATX? In some way modular re the bays?

One thing would be the life of the ssd getting worse depending how many writes you do. You would need to fresh install the os and follow a ssd optimization guide to make sure it's optimized properly. Windows 8 already has some of those features.

Other than running out of space I don't see how it would be an issue. There are plenty optimization guides on Google too.

Some people have full tower cases. Mine is a mid tower so its not as tall. But atx mobo will fit fine in either mid tower or full tower. Obviously for the most room a full tower case is best but I don't like how big they are.

A lot of the newer cases now have modular hd and bays that you can snap in or out if you want to install a giant gpu.

Many thanks for this. See, I ain no WUS by all accounts, but given SDDs have big, but finite read/writes.....that was always a concern of mine.

I just went to read my system and recommend stuff utility on Crucial......they came up with far more SSDs than formerly. Most on sale. Including a 1T one for only $525. (Eeeewwww.)

Not sure if their 250GB ones they recommend for me are as good as Samsung, the EVO or the other one, but I trust Crucial.

I tired to paste them, but the site said U have waaay too many images re the little icons.

See I do not wanna have to do clean installs. i work hard to keep my systems healthy and lean so they never loose speed so I don have to do that misery. I hate clean instals.

All my Optis have been and are standard ATX. If only for me, re desktops, the bigger the better, the better the thermal flow, etc. Plus, I can actually fit into them. Kidding, but I almost can.

Ahah! I guessed that! Tho never saw it or anything like it. Very clever that is!!!! Also, logical.
