I voted: I use an SSD as my desktop Boot Drive but keep my data on a Mechanical Drive

I've split my drives between boot drive and storage drives since about 2003. Even if SSD's get cheap and large enough that I move to them for storage, I will still split between a single OS drive and Data drives.

I currently store all my data on 2x2TB RAID1. workstations have smaller OS drives and critial data they need is then stored on the 2x2TB network share.

Just to clarify, is the meaning of using the mechanical drive inside or outside of the PC? Even if one occasionally uses a USB HDD to throw data on, is that lumped in with the hybrid users?

Anywho, I think it only pertinent to have a spinner in with an SSD if possible. If nothing else, placing the temporary files folder and pagefile onto it lengthens the SSD's life.

I'm not a big fan of the fact that they wear out from usage but I would probably give it a shot and make a small raid array with all SSDs and use it normally (VMs and stuff) to see how it fairs out. If I could get say, 3 years out of it, then it might be worth it for the extra performance boost. Guessing raid 10 is preferred over raid 5 for SSDs. Raid 0 is almost an option even, though that still takes balls of steel.

Well, re wearing out, finite number of writes, etc......that amazing chart someone was precious enuff to put up somewhere above....mitigated my intense paranoia about that.

See, for me, doing RAID 0....is no way about balls of steel, it is about some unhealthy, compulsive need to take risks, given the potential of that array. Or some need to mitigate being shut down by taking unhealthy, not intelligent risks. For me, thas not courage. Plus, with 2 SSDs who would need increased speed?

I have 3 SSD's in my desktop:
1x Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB for OS/apps
1x Samsung 840 Pro 128 GB for Steam (games)
1x Intel 330 80 GB for Steam (games)

I have 1 HDD (1 TB WD Blue) for data storage. I am planning to migrate all that data (which is primarily pictures, music, and documents) to my NAS. This way I have a HDD-less desktop. I could also store all this data on my OS SSD. I thought I would be safe and get the 256 GB SSD, but in reality, I just use 50 GB on the OS SSD (leaving ~206 GB free on the SSD). I am going to get a 512/500 GB SSD when it's on sale, and try to consolidate my Steam SSD's.

U mean in the poll?

Well, as I said a bazillion times, my plan is to go on with my established, for me entirely viable internal backup strategy: put everything on the SDD when it arrives, and use a mechanical drive as cloned backup.

I will never, ever need a ginormous drive of any species.

I wish, if someone here sees any issue with the above plan, they would say!!!!!

I use a 120GB Samsung 840 for my OS and a 480GB Crucial M500 to put everything else on.

SEE THIS??? Confidence in the technology. That confidence is what I was hoping to see unfold in this thread......to mitigate my long standing PARANOIA.

I knew this before I made this thread, then thought of the poll and rushed to do that. Had no clue what would unfold, of course.....we never do.

New question: I am assuming the on the way SSD has no firmware bugs. Cause I am not in the mood for that, OK? Very not. Is there anything I need to know I do not about TRIM IN w7 64-BIT?

If it's a single SSD, windows 7 will take care of TRIM for you automatically.

When you get your SSD, update the firmware pronto. Most firmware updates don't require a format, but it's still better to do it when you first get it.

Re TRIM, Thank you! I am crazy about W7. Was when I was running 32-bit in my now backup desktop, but I luv 64-bit even more in this system.

When U say single SSD.....you mean the only drive in the system, or the only SSD? Again, it won't be the only drive.

Yes, first thing I plan to do is update firmware if necessary!!!

Thanks again!

I meant single SSD that's not part of a RAID array. I know back in the day (like a year or two ago), RAID and Trim wouldn't play nice. I'm not sure if this is still the case, or if RAID arrays now support TRIM based on newer software/hardware.

No prob. SSD's are fast and reliable these days, so you are making a good choice. I got my first SSD in 2009, and I swore I would never go back to a computer using a HDD boot drive. Since then, every computer I use, got an SSD

Ahah! I get it now. I have never done RAID, doubt I ever will.....but positive never RAID 0. EVVVVAH.() I also do not sky dive.

Just went to Crucial and logged in......to track this order. Says "ready to ship.' Wut is taking them so long?

See how flawed human I am? I dragged my feet forever re going solid state, and now that I finally have, I want the thing in 17 minutes.

Yes, as far as the poll goes.. Well I mean the cloning doesn't solve the issue of constant writes from temp files and pagefiles is all I'm saying

Not only do I get that, it is one reason I have, until now, stuck with my spinners. But I also keep thinking, well, how bout those who have only lappys? And upgrade to an SSD as their only drive?

The must exist, right?

For me, having to worry about a drive's inherent limitations.....is stressful. I never had to with my spinners.

"spinners" die also. it doesn't matter what drive you have. backups are a life saver for critical data.

I am WAY IMPRESSED!!!! Not enuff to open it up and look, mind u, if it ever gets here, I know it will.....but that....is amazing!

What would confidence in the technology really have vs using an established per say hardware RAID 4TB array for storage over a second 480 SSD?

That.....was cute.:sneaky:

Not an issue, cause I am going to do aligned Clone from this WD Black!!!! Already have two apps perfectly made for this.

I will, of course, get rid of every single extraneous, junk, temp file before, make sure it is optimized, defragged, smiling, twerking---registry clean and hives compacted........the whole deal. Actually, I usually keep it close to that anyhow.

I mean anyone savvy who chooses to go all solid state (forget RAID, who cares?) no spinners in the system ....is showing confidence in SSD technology. BIG UNALLOYED CONFIDENCE.

That's one reason I made sure to include a poll choice: if ginormous SSDs were affordable, would you chose to have an SSD as yr stand alone drive in yr desktop?

That's a given. Tho so far, I only had ONE HDD drive emit I am not feelin good noises. I knew what it was, was able to save all my data. that was way back in a system before I evolved my internal backup strategy. In fact, that was wut inspired me to evolve that strategy.

I would rather eat worms than not have backup. Why anyone would do otherwise, I HAVE NO CLUE. Would be masochistic.

You should reinstall. It goes much faster with an SSD. I like it to be nice and clean when I get something new like that.

FWIW, my desktop is still running strong on a WD 750 Black. Those blacks are excellent spindle drives.

But I mean it, if you were here and saw first hand, how lean, mean clean this system is....you would be amazed!!!!!
All the configuring I do....did in this W7 installation alone.....takes big time.

Yes, this WD Black I got used but perfect and dead silent and so fast tho it's dual platter....$50 including shipping on eBay....IS A- MAAAAAZING. After, I missed two others just like it, one for even less money. But maybe that was meant to be to push me to make threads and finally move onto SSD.

Cause that is exactly how it went down.

After running SSD's for several years now, I have moved to disk-less on my current build. Prior to this I always kept my 1Tb Raptor involved for storage. Just don't need to anymore.
