The question is rather misleading in the poll, IMO. I answered 'no' but I realize I was mistaken.

You have a right to discipline a child, that is definitely a fact (so, yes to the poll). Should you ever hit your kid? fsck no.

I got spanked 3 times. once for shoplifting, once for busting windows out of a church (yeah im going to hell) and once for calling my mother a b!tch.

did you deserve them and did it do any goo in your opinion?
by the way I am a yes also only liberals with thier head in the sand would equate a swat on the butt with child abuse.

The way I see it, if I can take a newspaper to my dog's nose to discipline her (for bad things like getting into trash) then I can bend my kids over and spank them to discipline them if the situation warrants it. You need to do something to get through to your kids, and sometimes a physical punishment will be the only thing that works.

Finally, some reason here. Everyone knows that duck taping your kid to a chair and putting them in the closet for a week is far more effective!

Hey, I've never hit my son and I've disciplined him plenty without any sort of physical punishment. Hopefully, I will never feel the need to resort to that kind of punishment but I think there are situations in which a spanking would be warranted.

So yes, parents absolutely do have the right to discipline their kids by spanking them.

Edit-Do you have children? Until you have children of your own you are not qualified to make any rules for those of us who do. This goes for all you armchair parents!!!

Absolutely.

You can't use logic with a small child but they CAN understand "When I do that my ass hurts for a few minutes."

I don't know what kind of kids you hang out with but I haven't found this to be the case.

So you can logically reason with a 4 year old? I call shens.

You'd be surprised. Four year olds understand more than people give them credit for. Part of the problem is that people think they're completely clueless. Besides, I don't quite understand the logic behind this. If they aren't capable of "logical reasoning" as you claim, what makes you think they'll be able to draw a link between pain and something they did?

The majority of child misbehavior isn't from the kids but from the people around them. The best way to stop it is not to hit but to look at yourself and see what sort of example you're setting. That said, my mom smacked me around for a few years and to this day, I don't appreciate it one bit.

Edit: I know a number of Quakers who pursuant to their nonviolence beliefs, don't hit their children. These kids are the same ones who go to top universities and colleges. Go figure. There ARE better ways out there, it's just that some people are a.) too lazy, or b.) too ignorant to figure them out.

Part of the problem is people like you over analyzing the problem. I know if my dad knocked me out our punched my ass I wouldnt have some of the things I have done.

it's precisely because i believe 4 yr olds are capable of logic that i also believe they can be take advantage of wishy washy parents.

What are your reasons for voting yes/no?

Are you asking if parents can legally beat their kids?

The answer is yes. People beat their kids all the time.

If you are asking "should parents beat their kids?"

That is a different question.

Like this?

Speaking as a teenager, spanking, when not done in anger and used sparingly (as my parents did), is beneficial; it seemed to help me, IMHO. However, beating the crap out of your kids because they [for example] brought home a report card with one A- among a sea of A+'s is nothing but child abuse and is very wrong. I feel great sympathy for any kid that had to grow up in an environment like that.
