I am considering swtiching to trillian to cosolidate my IM need.

I have a few questions for those using it ?

1. Is trillian a bloated ware ?

2. What's the difference between the normal and Pro version ?

3. For those who are using it, do u like it ?

4. Does trillian keep log of all IM history and is it easy to backup the user profile ?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

1. a little, right now it's using 11MB of RAM, but i'm connected on AIM, Y!, ICQ, MSN, and IRC, so it's not too bad

2. I forgot what the non-pro version was like, i shelled out the $25 and haven't looked back! Pro version is awesome

3. I love it, love how every window looks exactly the same and are the exact same size, and the plugins rule. There are a few little problems with file transfer, but i have a website and a few FTP servers so that's usually not a problem.

4. never backed up the default profile, i have trillian installed on a partition i never format, so can't answer that one for ya. and yes, it keeps logs if you want it to, i have a log that goes back over a year with a buddy, weird to read through that thing.

advice: get the nocturnal revisited skin, weather plugin, spellcheck plugin, and email plugin

anyone have any other good plugins i should get let me know!

The only downside to trillian is there is no support for the msn webcam. Otherwise it is great.

1) no it's not bloatware for the pro version - not sure about the regular version. Nothing that I can't turn off via menu item. No ads whatsoever.

2) see 1

3) love it. I tried installing AIM and the crap I have to sift through when installing... can't even install DeadAIM without installing AIM first... what a mess. Then MSN messenger is a monster by itself. I also have a couple people on Yahoo so this was naturally the client for me. Management is easy... list is thru an XML file if you ever have to go edit it offline.

4) chat logs are all recorded on txt files so even if you set the buffer to 500 lines, the entire history with any given user is in a txt file. It shows the buffer amount by default kinda faded so you can see the history right away when you click on a buddy intending to chat. It's great for looking up sent links to people too.

I have been using pro for a long time now. I wont use anything else. There can be some issues with file transfers/webcams, but that is my only complaint.

I use GAIM on linux, connecting to both AIM and Yahoo, and I'm not particularly concerned about webcam support (which it doesn't appear to have yet). Only real problem is that I can receive files, but not send them. Other than that, I consider it superior to the official clients.

I use the regular (free). Not bloatware (using 6.5 MB right now, with aim, msn, icq, and yahoo connected). Found it like 4 years ago and haven't looked back. Most problems with file transfer can be worked out eventually, but overall, it runs smooth and better than the original clients....

I have everything open except ICQ and IRC and it's using 6.5MB minimized. It only goes up to 10MB if I have 4 IM windows open.

my msn messenger takes up 7876K to be exact... which version are you talking about, 6.x? those definitely are bloatwares fo sho... i use 4.7, does everything i want. at school labs i am forced to use trillian when a need arises, not a big fan of its interface here :|

EDIT : pls dont you tell you waste all your saved memory on some POSware like winamp...

What, WinAmp is ? Hardly. Using 10mb right now, and it's been open for quite awhile, too. (Winamp 5). With the easy-as-all-what-to-install MAD plugin, Winamp sounds better than anything else out there, and it's a great interface, and looks great, to boot.

Oh, and as for Trillian - Free version starts bugging you after you use it for 2000 hours or so. It bugged me, so I went to Pro. It rules, but Free's only drawback is less extras.

I wasn't referring to memory used in that paragraph at all. AIM and MSN are bloatware in the sense that they give you things you don't need and the ads and popup warnings are aplenty. What a PITA.

wow, thats as far as from truth i have heard. nothing comes close to foobar2000 in terms of memory and cpu burden, simplicity, customizability and technical superiority. I am sure you are getting some great sound with your kmixer (assuming no ASIO just MAD) FLAC on winamp is flaky at best. when used with ASIO/SSRC/MAD winamp is *technically* identical to foobar but a vast majority report foobar to be superior for some reason (could be placebo but oh well). even those few who still with winamp dont use anthing above 2.84 (or whatever 2.xx) thats newest. winamp has gone to shithole once it got taken over by fAgIM. (not that 2.xx was any better than what foobar is). just download foobar and find out what have you been missing

again, using MSN 4.7 : i dont see any popups or ads you speak of... just simiple and functional, no moss, no fuss. last time i checked trillian doesnt work well with 2-byte languages (i need it for korean support). changing the gif background for a change is fun too

I always had problems with file transfers. It uses older protocol than some of the official messengers and that is why I stopped using it. It didn't work very well with ICQ anyway (none of the clones do). I used it forever but now I just use AIM and MSN the official ones.

I used to use trillian, but then for some reason yahoo's and Microsucks IM's systems wouldn't work anymore, no matter what version of trillian I used.

1. no, runs very fast
2. pro looks better and has more futures.
3. the windows are the same size, very customizable, minimize msgs to systray, notifications for certain users, plugins, skin
4. yes, mine are like couple of mbs large. i just copy and paste my user profile into a text file if i want to keep it.

Only problem I have is with incoming FT's with MSN. Every other IM is fine for incoming and outgoing FT's
