I ususally refer to a drink by its name, but if not, I use "coke" to refer to everything (california bred). when I moved to ohio, I found out everybody calls it "pop" which also bugs the hell out of me. those weird ohioans.

Uhhhh I was raised and lived in california for 20 years. NOBODY refers to everyhing as "coke".

Everyone who is born in california from my exp calls it "Soda", or by the name of the drink.

jenniz is right. born and raised here, and not a single person I know from california calls SODA coke. In my house there are 72 guys from all over Calif. and not one says coke. The one guy from New Jersey used to say pop, but we have cured him of that

Calling it pop just sounds very 50's or midwestern to me. It's odd to say it. pop. I could never imagine saying to a friend of mine, "Get me a pop when you go downstairs."

Coke.

But let me explain. ANY soft drink mahcine is a COKE MACHINE. --Even if it contains only fruit juice. If it has only pepsi products, it's a coke machine. The whole world of soft drinks is called coke collectively, but when we are at a restaurant, we don't ask for coke and then get asked what kind. That's just plain STUPID. Nobody does that. If you are being served a drink you ask for it by name. So, the

<< customer: May I have a Coke please?
service: Yes, what kind would you like...
customer: Coke.
>>

is just a funny joke, and nothing more. We don't do that. And people in atlanta don't call it coke because coke is based there. They call it coke because this is the south, and thats what people in the south call it. Now, though we don't call it all coke in a restaurant, when asking someone to pick you one up or get you one in a gas station or hand you one out of the fridge, it's usually all coke, which then needs further clarification. It's pretty simple, actually.

When I lived in Indiana, it was referred to as "pop."

I live in Louisiana and all of the people I come in contact with call it "soda water."

Whenever I want something, I call it by its name...

purplehayes is right. Born and raised in Kansas, so I've always called it pop. Whenever I travel to the coasts however, I usually just ask for a Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, etc. to avoid the criticism and questions.

The Dancing Peacock you sure that brother of yours is from Jersey? Probably western Jersey right? I've never really heard anyone in Jersey calling it anything but soda. But then again I live on the Eastern part of the state...

Pop - lol, something old and weird people say (around here at least)
Soda - Again, an old person term, also used by waiters/waitresses (And no one else)
Coke - normal slang

Growing up in North Carolina I have always called it Coke. Funny, considering NC is home of Pepsi.
