My Radeon 9700Pro has "steaming waves" at 1280x1024 resolution. Changing to 1152x864 fixed the problem. Fortunately, I have a CRT monitor instead of LCD, so I got many good resolutions to choose.

Those who have an LCD monitors that can only do 1280x1024 nicely might suffer from the Radeon 9700Pro.

For some people (including me), I get a slight ghosting effect with text. It's especially bad if it's black text on a white background like what you would see under Windows Explorer, Notepad, Word, etc.. This is the first card in a long time that I've encountered that does this, with the last one being a Guillemot Maxi-Gamer Voodoo1.

I have this EXACT problem on my 8500 retail 64mb. I've tried just about every bios (7004, 7008, 8004) and nothing seems to help. I also notice that the problem gets progressively worse the longer my system has been running. I thought it might be a heat issue so I installed ramsinks to no avail. I thought maybe my card was damaged in some way, but maybe it's just the issue that you're talking about.

Does anyone know of a workaround for this? Is it a software issue or is it a hardware problem? Thanks,

Ok at work (co-worker's monitor/cpu, etc.) he got a new 19" CRT and it had horrible flickering 1024x768 32bit 85Hz. Tried this and that power interference. Anyway we moved it to another area still same problem with different monitors. That nailed it down to the video card. It is a new msi nforce2 built on video. Anyway I read this thread but didn't see anything that could help me but did try many suggestions. Well what just now solved it for me was changing 32bit to 16-bit and voila no more 'wave flickering'.

that fix didn't work for me.

i have a feeling this might be caused by some sort of interference.

I have a 9500 and when I start up my computer, my bios screen will appear fine and sometimes will also have some corruption (bits and pieces of the bios screen appearing in different spots) like it's trying to display it again. Also when I get into windows, I will get scrolling and flickering lines going up and down my monitor for a few seconds and then goes away. Really strange.

I get these lines at 1024x768 in games running a refresh rate of 85. I'm going to play around with the refresh. See if it affects anything.

I highly doubt this is a power issue. I have an excellent powersupply, and I never had a problem with my old video card.

P.s. these lines are not noticeable at the desktop (1280x1024@85Hz)

I have them with my ATI 9700 PRO AIW card and also used to have them with a Geforce2 Pro card years ago.

Don't flame me for this. But it might be V-sync.... ;|

Well, if you can show us how to disable/enable VSYNC in DESKTOP, that'd be great.

Anyway, I thought I'd update this thread. My problem has been completely fixed. No wavey lines anymore regardless of refreshrate or resolution I use.

What did I do? I replaced the card with another 9700 Pro. My 9700 Pro of five months got damaged so I picked up another one this weekend after the price drop. This one works perfectly.

I say the wavey lines problem is with the card itself. Now comparing the two side by side, I did notice some subtle changes to the card. Maybe this issue as already been addressed with the later revision? If so, that means if you have an older card, you're pretty much screwed.

well i have an eearly revision of the card and now issue. however i hardly see how you are screwed by anybody but yourself if you didn't even bother to try resolving the issue by haveing the card replaced under warinity.

Well, that's provided you can still RMA the card. Many folks here are enthusiast and some have already modded the card. In any event, my point is that if ATI has isolated and corrected this problem, it's not in they're best interest to advertise that they did because they'd be replacing a crap load of cards.

In the last month, I have tried three ATI brand 9700Pro cards from the Bestbuy nearest to me. All with wavy lines on my computer. Returned them one by one. This type of card seems not work well with certain monitors, at least not with my iiyama Vision Master Pro 450. The old 8500 128MB I replaced worked perfectly though.

I've got a Radeon 9500 pro, and using it with a Samsung 755df. I only get these lines when using a refresh rate of 60-65hz. Anything higher will cause these liens to disappear. I don't get that text ghosting in winexplorer btw

That's pretty much my situation too only I have an older Dell 1028L (or something) monitor and when I up the refresh my screen shrinks and I'm almost afraid to try playing Generals like that.

I notice them mainly in Windows but every once in a while on Linux as well.

Don't you mean upping the resolution? Screen would only shrink when the resolution increased. I only hate upping the refresh rate because at a higher refresh rate the text on my screen tends to blur more. I like a refresh rate of 75hz compared to 85hz since at 75hz I get really sharp text. Than again it could be just my monitor...

but it isn't isolated to nvidia chipsets and many people with nvidia chipsets have no issues at all. so i would not point my finger at that.
