you would be a fool if you can't think of any alternatives to a floppy..
every computer you'll ever use now is connected to the net.
I set up an ftp server on my computer, where I can directly save and load all my files on my computer from any computer.
you could always email it to yourself or use free webhosts..

my main rig, at the moment is my lappy.
and it's got a removeable bay...
i use either cdrom or floppy in it.

though i don't think it's as crucial to have one as many many years ago..
it's still nice to have one sitting there.
just in case.

I refuse to buy a laptop without one. On my desktop, it's essentially free (I bought it about 3 PC's ago) so no reason not to have it in there for the occasional times it's needed.

Yes, USB drive doesn't really replace the floppy.
On many computers, the USB ports are in the back, very difficult to get to compared to inserting a floppy in the floppy drive.

I don't have one in any of my three systems, and I haven't for years. With 52X CDRW's going for about $30, and the media being even cheaper, and bios flashing being done in the windows enviroment now, I just don't see the point. I do keep one in the house for the odd time I need one...usually only when I do a fresh install of XP on my main system since my Raptor is on a SATA controller..

The only comp in the house that is floppyless is the server and the only drive it has is a 120GB HD.

Even in school I never needed one.. if I needed to move documents around I would just upload them to my school ftp drive and download them someplace else, like a lab for printing.

That said, my current machine (built last summer) does not have a floppy, nor have I had any need for one. CD-RWs work just as good.

Given that they cost next to nothing, do not use up an IDE connection, and can come in real handy in a lot of situations, I don't understand why anyone would not install one in their machine. I mean really, other than "I'm just too cool to have that old stuff in my rig" to me there's just no good reason not to include one.

I got a nice deal on some of the "7-in-1" floppy drives that handle floppies but also every kind of flash memory. Very nice, it just sits in there like a normal floppy (it's the same size too), but you can put in a floppy or any kind of memory......

Yes.

For wrok, I work with smallish docs that easily fit on a floppy. Much more reliable than a network.

Yes, some web clients provide content to me on a floppy (not every business owner is our generation).

Only if you don't disable the floppy in the board's bios, and the bios is set to stop on any startup errors. Otherwise, you just disable it and it boots normally...
